IN THE NEWS
Turin's gourmet-food bazaar, Eataly, opens in NYC this spring
It's Slow Food-meets-Whole Foods! Last year, EATALY introduced Italians to the idea of a gourmet megastore. The food bazaar's wildly successful 30,000-square-foot space in Turin includes a wood-burning pizza oven, a butcher specializing in Piemontese beef, a cheese-aging cellar, and much more.
Now it's America's turn. This spring, Eataly will open a branch in New York City. (Slow Food International is, in fact, a key consultant.)
FROM THE DOLCE VITA KITCHEN
Ginger Prosecco Cocktail
Impress your guests with this pretty cocktail. It's elegant, festive, and oh-so-easy!
1/2 cup chopped fresh ginger
2/3 cup plus 2 tbsp sugar
1/4 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
3 tbsp chopped crystallized ginger
8 whole star anise
1 bottle (750 ml) Prosecco
Bring ginger, 2/3 cup of sugar and 1/2 cup water to a boil in a small saucepan. Reduce to a simmer; cook until liquid thickens to maple syrup consistency, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat; let cool. Strain syrup; discard ginger.
Combine Chinese five-spice powder and remaining 2 tbsp sugar on a shallow plate. Moisten the rim of fluted wine glasses with water and dip in sugar. Drop 1 tsp crystallized ginger and 1 star anise into each glass. Add 1 tbsp syrup and about 3 oz Prosecco.
