  Inside: This Week in Autos
For pretty much the first 100 years of the automobile's existence, the greatest achievement a car company could make was to build something that started when it was supposed to, stopped when it was supposed and didn't burst into flames in between. Those of us who were fortunate enough to buy a car in 2007 no longer need to worry about that. That is because cars today are light-years ahead in terms of reliability and safety. In fact, it is safe to say that they have never been better. Yes, most of them could do better in terms of fuel economy but in terms of engineering, performance, technology and sheer driving pleasure, we are living in an automotive golden age. Point in fact: the Buick Enclave. This sensational SUV was introduced by GM as a 2007 model, and it was an immediate hit—as it deserved to be. But it was a Buick! A brand that many industry watchers gave up for dead years ago. Now it, and a number of other Detroit models, earned accolades from the media and consumers—including the terrific new Chevy Malibu, Cadillac CTS and Ford Edge. It was winners such as these that made this year's round up of the best cars of 2007 such a pleasant surprise. (Of course there were sensational imports as well-lead by the Honda Accord, Mercedes C-Class and BMW 3 Series.) But what really impressed us was that when we went to tote up the number of bad cars, we had such a hard time coming up with any that we ended up scrapping the list altogether. Elsewhere this week, we looked at the rough times ahead for Chrysler's new owner, Cerberus Capital, and Renault's Carlos Ghosn latest deal with Russia's Lada. Enjoy.
