Hard as Nails, HBOHard as Nails
Evangelism from the Outside
HBO, Monday 12/17 8 PM ET/PT
Melinda Ledman, TV Editor

This documentary follows the life of Justin Fatica and the Hard as Nails ministry he is building through Catholic (and now adding Protestant) churches. A bit of an anomaly within the Catholic tradition, Justin is part in-your-face evangelist, part Hip Hop gangster, part Billy Graham. Admittedly, I was more curious to see how the confessed-atheist director would treat the content than I was in how the film would impact me. But soon those thoughts would be overshadowed. And so, my initial assessment is that this film encapsulates everything I both love and hate about evangelism.

I think it would actually be easier to view this film if I were an atheist. That way, I could simply dismiss the people as a bunch of misled folks following another gifted religious salesman. I could casually acknowledge that they were making some moderate positive change for good in the world, laugh to myself as they cried, lifted up hands, and prayed over one another, and then change the channel to something more enticing like CSI. And maybe that's the part I hate about evangelism. If you're not part of the experience, it looks a bit like lemmings running over a cliff together.

Hard as Nails acknowledges that most viewers will question and disapprove of Justin's methods of sharing the Gospel (and of his whole ministry for that matter-the way they train leaders and youth, the way they use their money, the way they present their faith). The film almost invites us to disapprove. But just about the time we are at the height of our criticism, the film unloads the truth.

Looking Forward to Prince Caspian
Chronicles of Narnia Coverage Continues

Trailer for Next Narnia Film Reopens Debate
Andrew Townsend

Interesting timing! I was all ready to write about what might be in the next Narnia film, based on how The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe had been adapted, when the trailer appeared for Prince Caspian. So, now I can comment on what should be in the forthcoming film.

I found The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe film faithful to the plot and characters in the book and, for me, it did more to create the atmosphere of Narnia than reading the book. Perhaps this is because C.S. Lewis was writing for children and avoided long descriptive passages. However, I can't help noting that, in his essays, Lewis was concerned that adapting a book for film might destroy some of the real satisfaction of the story.

In particular, he referred to the possibility that too much film action can be hostile to deeper imagination and a sense of wonder.

So, what can we learn from the trailer for Prince Caspian? We are warned that Narnia is now a more savage place, so perhaps this film will not be as suitable for the youngest fans as I had hoped. The reasoning given in interviews is the result of years of oppressive rule by the Telmarines. It may also be an excuse for more battle scenes. Does this more serious tone mean that we will lose some of the humorous characters and dialogue? This may not be a bad thing in some cases.

Wolverine: The Jungle Adventure
Savage Savior
Jesse Johnson | 12/12/07 | Comix
In this story, Simonson writes Wolverine into a unique environment, one that both the reader and the main character begin to love more and more as the story develops. For me, the Savage Land has always been a fascinating location.

It's only fitting to have part of the story be about imagination and the world's need for it. People tend to lose that imagination as they get older but it is so essential to us as a human being fully alive.
