Craft of Scandinavia Tries Self-Inventorying Display for Its
Wares
Craft of Scandinavia, a Swedish company that sells athletic clothing
in retail stores around the country, is testing an RFID-enabled self-
inventorying product display developed by clothing label producer
Nilorn Group. Currently, Craft salespeople visit stores to inventory
those items on the shelf and determine what needs to be reordered. The
workers record sizes, colors and models of any outfits running low,
though many are already out of stock.
Craft turned to RFID to find a way to take inventory without having to
visit each store. Since September, it has been piloting a mobile test
unit in Nilorn's Gothenburg showroom. The tests have involved various
readers, tags, antennas and software. If the trial goes well, Craft
expects
to install the system at stores across Sweden that sell its merchandise.
The display features an RFID reader, with two antennas affixed to the
shelves. The built-in interrogator reads the EPC Gen 2 passive UHF
RFID tag attached to the garments' packaging. Attached to the reader
is a GPRS or GSM device that, during the night, can transmit inventory
data to an Internet-based server regarding items on the shelf. Craft
then receives an e-mail message with each morning's inventory result.
