As guests and family come home for the holidays, you have the opportunity to showcase the heirlooms and collectibles that reflect who you are. Unlike china cabinets, which are specifically designed for dining areas, curios can be used in many different rooms of the house and can display anything from wedding albums to artwork. Curios can be traditional, contemporary, antique, or even elaborately ornate – whichever style best fits your taste. This holiday season, customize your home with the little things that reveal your unique character.

We are downsizing & my daughter is going into a very small bedroom. What suggestions to you have for a teenage girl's small space? Storage will be an issue! Any style solutions and suggestions would be appreciated! S.K. Orlando, FL

 |
When downsizing, people are often left with all of the items they had before they scaled back, and far less space to put them in. One great solution is vertical storage. Teenagers often need storage for books, stereos, CDs, and the like, which can easily go in bookcases or other vertical shelving. For delicate belongings or collectibles, a curio or étagère are wonderful options. Storage beds, which are available in several of our groups, are also a great way to discretely store items such as clothing and shoes without taking up more space in the room. Get creative with the highest and least accessed parts of the closet as well. Large suitcases can be placed up and out of reach, and packed with other bulky items such as blankets, sweaters, or off-season items. Best of luck to your family!

How would I go about locating/researching the right size/display features in a curio? I have an extensive doll collection and would like to display them. S.L. Durham, NC

 |
When considering a curio for a specific collection, you should look for features that highlight each individual piece and offer the most versatility. For example, adjustable shelves will allow you to customize the height you need for each tier so that you can get the sizing just right. Interior lighting and mirrored backs are a great way to highlight specific details or items, according to how you want to focus the display. Features like these allow you to be the designer in creating a collection showcase that’s all your own.

What is the best way to blend your furniture when you have different tastes? My husband likes more of a modern style and I have more of a traditional, formal style. M.C. Laurel, MD
|
 |
The key to blending furnishing tastes smoothly is to choose pieces that have a transitional style. A transitional piece is one that has elements of various styles done in a very simple, clean design, which allows the piece to work in a number of décors. To see an example of transitional styling, take a look at our Hayley collection. The button-tufting and simple cording are suggestive of a traditional style, while the sleek silhouette and angular legs denote a more modern look. Even the ottoman is transitional, with the traditional polished leather upholstery meeting a contemporary, streamlined silhouette. Once you have the furniture selected, you can add chic tables with clean lines and traditional lamps with a bit of antique detail to complete your transitional décor.

Adjustable Shelves: Adjustable shelves offer great versatility when it comes to the scale and arrangement of your display. Closely line up the shelves to display more items; or space the shelves out to make room for taller pieces.
Interior Lighting: Interior lighting allows you to enhance your display by highlighting the details. Whether you want to emphasize that autograph on a football or a detail on a delicate figurine, interior lighting will add a special ambiance.
Mirrored Back: Mirrors always create the illusion of added dimension, which is especially important when space is tight. Furthermore, many items are as unique and beautiful on the back or sides as they are from the front; and a mirrored back won't let a single detail go unnoticed.
