  Inside: This Week in Autos
A new report out this week from J.D. Power shows that Toyota is the No. 1 brand for customer loyalty, with 65% of respondents saying they'd trade in an old Toyota for a new one. Its Lexus luxury division came in second, at 63% The American brand with the most loyalty? GM, with 53% (the industry average was 49%). As Detroit senior correspondent David Kiley writes a "solid record of quality and reliability combined with clarity and consistency of advertising keeps customers coming back" to Toyota. If there was any doubt about the efficacy of this approach, one only has to look at the November auto sales numbers reported this week, where Toyota once again bucked the trend, by positing a slight increase while GM fell 11% from November '06, Chrysler dipped 2.1% and Ford was flat. While much of the reason behind these declines is Detroit's decision to move away from unprofitable fleet sales, next year's performance will be crucial because GM and Ford in particular are rolling out new models that have been designed to better compete with imports in terms of both engineering and fuel efficiency. If these fail to significantly catch on, 2008 could be the grimmest yet for U.S. auto makers. Speaking of imports, we reviewed both the Mazdaspeed3 and the Toyota Corolla Matrix, and, yes, both were pretty good. Enjoy.
