| The Olympian's O2Go Mobile for Monday, Dec. 10, 2007 From the front page Aid available for flood victims Federal disaster aid will be available to individuals and businesses in Grays Harbor and Lewis counties who need somewhere to stay, help with repairs or other assistance after last week's violent storms and widespread flooding, officials said Sunday. Gov. Chris Gregoire said other counties might be added to the list. Church becomes hub of recovery Pastor Tom Peterson retold the story of his family's flood evacuation before his congregation Sunday at Centralia First United Methodist Church, was one of several church members affected by the storm. He turned his own experience into a message about hope in times of hardship. Congregation members have pulled together since the storm. Owners of flood-hit businesses work to salvage their companies Ranch House BBQ restaurant co-owner Melanie Tapia is expected to announce today that kitchen space at the Governor Hotel has been donated to the business, free of charge. Other businesses affected by last week's flooding are working to open their doors again. South Sound Laboratory class delves into DNA, microbiology Testing for blood type happens in a crime or hospital lab, and it's part of a new yearlong class at New Market Skills Center, which offers vocational training and high school credit to South Sound school district students. The "CSI" in the class name stands for Clinical and Scientific Investigation, not Crime Scene Investigation, like the TV show. GOP seeks to review mansion remodel The Washington State Republican Party has requested records on construction work done to the Governor's Mansion since Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire took up residence in 2005. The request was for all documents "regarding remodels or construction work" in the mansion and their costs. Esser said he wasn't looking for anything in particular. Yearly peace vigil aims to uphold sentiments of holidays The 32nd annual Holiday Peace Vigil will take place Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. in downtown Olympia. The vigil will take place along both sides of West Fourth Avenue, along the south side of Percival Landing and in front of Heritage Fountain. The vigil is sponsored by the Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation, which has worked nonviolently since 1976 on peace and social justice issues. Intersection of College Street and 37th Avenue Southeast draws attention A Lacey resident asks when the city will install "protected" left turns at the corner of College Street and 37th Avenue Southeast. A city official says the request has been forwarded to the transportation division for review. State workers Hundreds of state workers help in storm cleanup At the front of efforts to respond to last week's storms were hundreds of state workers. They didn't make headlines, but were often on the minds of top state leaders. Leaders praised workers in their agencies for their efforts during the storms. Department of Revenue earns 15th consecutive clean audit The Department of Revenue, which processed nearly $18 billion in state and local tax revenue in the past fiscal year, has earned its 15th-straight clean audit from the Washington State auditor. Military spouses can get job, school help The Employment Security Department has been awarded $3.7 million by the federal departments of Labor and Defense to help military spouses find jobs, get training or launch a new career. Sports Seahawks clinch division with win over Cardinals Matt Hasselbeck threw four touchdown passes - the most of his soaring season - and the Seattle Seahawks clinched their fourth consecutive NFC West title with an emphatic, 42-21 victory over Arizona on Sunday. |
