EASY EVERGREEN AROMA
If you don't like the mess or expense of a real Christmas tree (or would
like to spare a tree), but miss the evergreen smell, here's an idea. Most
places that sell Christmas trees will give away the clippings for free.
We got ours at a local Home Depot. Just fill a bag up with the trimmings,
take them home and use pruning shears to take a couple of inches off the
bottom, then place in a large vase filled with water and a little bit of
lemon juice. If you'd like to add a little color, tie a red bow around
it. Place the vase anywhere you'd like to have that fresh pine smell.
POST IT...with your Christmas decorations.

CHECK YOUR PRESCRIPTIONS
You may have seen recent news reports about an actor's new twins who were
given 10,000 units of a medication (twice), instead of the 10 unit dose
that was supposed to be given. Thankfully they seem to have stabilized.
While there are a lot of precautions taken in the medical profession to
prevent this kind of thing, medical personnel are human and being the
same, mistakes do happen. As parents and patients ourselves, we need to
be as vigilant as the medical personnel in making sure we are getting the
right dose of things and the right medications. Whenever you get a new
prescription, ask what it is for and ask the doctor how many of the pills
you will take and when. Ask the doctor to write everything down, or you
should write it down. This is especially important in cases where the
diagnosis or medication needed was a bit of a shock. Repeat the
instructions back to the doctor to confirm at least once. It is also
helpful to bring a family member or friend along to help you remember
things. Look at the prescription and make sure the prescription says the
same thing the doctor says. If possible make a copy of the prescription
for your own records, or copy by hand what it says. Some common
abbreviations are "bid" for twice a day, "tid" for three times a day,
"prn" for as needed. When you get the prescription filled at the
pharmacy, make sure the label says the same thing the prescription did.
If you have a bottle label underneath the store label, check to make sure
it says the same thing. Do they look like the same pills you have been
taking, if you are given a refill. Make sure you are given the correct
number of pills or bottles (pill counting is best done at home). READ,
READ, READ the information the pharmacy prints out for you about the
medication and possible interactions BEFORE you take it. If you have any
doubts whatsoever, call the pharmacy & ask about it. Then take the
prescription as directed. If you ever find a problem with a prescription,
be sure to report it to the head pharmacist where the prescription was
filled, AND to your doctor. If it was a big error, or happens more than
once, I'd definitely recommend going to another pharmacy. If new side
effects are reported, ask your doctor about it. Even if you are in the
hospital, ask what you are being given and why. If you get shots on a
regular basis, watch the amount they draw; once someone tried to give me
5cc of an allergy shot instead of 0.5cc, a big difference that could have
caused a severe allergic reaction. Recently someone we knew went to get a
prescription filled and had a close call. She was supposed to take 25mg
bid of a medication to slow her heart rate. When she got the pill bottle,
the store label said 25mg, but the bottle underneath said 100 mg and the
pills looked bigger. She wisely took them back to her pharmacist who
apologized for the error. She also informed her doctor what happened.
I've also seen a case where children were given an anti-seizure med and
the pharmacy filled it with a higher dose than the prescription said, and
the children became so lethargic that their parents brought them in and
the mistake was discovered. As I said, mistakes do happen and we should
be just as careful as the medical personnel with what we put into our
bodies. POST IT...with your prescriptions.

SHINGLES VACCINE
Many insurance companies will now pay for adults 60 years old and older to
get a Shingles vaccine. Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes
chicken pox, so if you've ever had chicken pox or the chicken pox vaccine,
then you are vulnerable to shingles. While the new vaccine only prevents
cases in about 50% of the people, if you happen to be in that 50% you'll
be happy to have gotten the vaccine. Even the people who got the vaccine
and still got shingles had less pain. Most people who get shingles will
get a rash on one side of the face or body that lasts 2-4 weeks, along
with pain which can be severe. You might also have flu like symptoms.
Shingles infections can lead to pneumonia, hearing problems, blindness,
brain inflammation, or even death. For 1 in 5 people the severe pain can
continue even after the rash clears up. Even if your insurance won't
cover it, it might be worth the approx. $160 to go ahead & get it done
anyway. Be sure to check with your doctor to see if you should get it.
POST IT...with your doctor's info.

RECIPE: EASY LEMON PIE
Purchase or make a LARGE graham cracker pie crust (or you can split the
recipe into 2 small ones). Buy two 22 oz cans of lemon pie filling (or
you can make your own). Spread one can on bottom of crust. Take the
second can and mix with 6 oz of regular Cool Whip (1/2 of 12oz tub), and
spread on top of first layer. Chill in fridge overnight and it'll have
the consistency of semi-soft pudding. If you'd like it a little firmer,
freeze for an hour before serving. Just before serving spread remaining
Cool Whip on top of pie. Garnish with thin lemon slices or fresh lemon
peel if desired. If not going to eat all at once, then only spread the
topping on by slice. Store remaining pie with empty slots tilted up by
folding a kitchen towel under the edge of the empty slots. POST IT...in
your recipe box & shopping list.
