  Inside: This Week in Autos
One of the most fun things about covering the auto industry is getting a chance to check out the annual crop of concept cars. While many of these cars look way too far-out to ever be used in anything other than a sci-fi movie, they aren't just indulgences for the designers. Each car allows the car maker to experiment, push the envelope and maybe even conceive a car that might become the next Mustang or Camry. This week Autos reporter Jim Henry looked back over the concept cars introduced at auto shows around the world this past year and noticed that the biggest trend was, unsurprisingly, small cars. In fact, one concept from last January's Detroit auto show, the subcompact Chevy Beat, is now scheduled for production for mid-2009. But this week it wasn't only about small cars. Contradicting most recent trends, a report this week announced that residual sales of mid- and large-size SUVs were up in the U.S. as many former SUV owners found that the smaller vehicles they replaced them with just weren't big enough—nor in many cases offered significantly improved fuel economy. Elsewhere this week, we also rounded up the best cars to drive in winter. Last, we reviewed the excellent Chrysler Town & Country. Enjoy.

Let me just say before I go into this that Toyota, because of its emphasis on quality and "green" technology, the company has a target on its back when it falls short in either department. At this week's LA Auto Show, Toyota took the wraps off its new Sequoia SUV. It is bigger and thirstier than the old model. Huh? Toyota? closequote
