Several anonymous readers pointed us at CNET UK's Crave blog for a list
of what is or was, in their opinion, the worst consumer tech in history.
[0]Vista comes in at number 10, in company with [1]Apple's puck mouse
(number 6) and [2]Sony's CD rootkit (number 9). According to Crave:
"[Vista's] incompatibility with hardware, its obsessive requirement of
human interaction to clear security dialogue box warnings and its abusive
use of hated DRM, not to mention its general pointlessness as an upgrade,
are just some examples of why this expensive operating system earns the
final place in our terrible tech list." That's gotta hurt a little,
coinciding as it does with Apple's [3]Don't Give Up On Vista attack ad.

g-san writes "Some Mac users are [0]having problems with the latest
10.4.11 update, yours truly included. The problem seems to be caused by
the presence of a Boot Camp partition and renders the Mac unable to
reboot after the update fails. Note the Geniuses at the Apple stores are
recommending a full disk wipe; but data can be recovered via Firewire."
MacNN has a note up that if you fall victim to this "known issue" and
need to reformat the disk, you [1]can't reinstall Boot Camp because it is
no longer available to OS X 10.4 Tiger users.

HeavensBlade23 sends in an article from the German site Spiegel Online
about mounting evidence that [0]nuclear radiation may not be as deadly as
has been widely believed. The article cites studies by German, US, and
Japanese researchers concluding, for example, that fewer than 800 deaths
are attributable to the after-effects of radiation in over 86,500
survivors of the Hiroshima bombing. Other surprisingly low death rates
are reported in studies of Chernobyl and of a secret Siberian town called
Mayak, devoted to producing plutonium, that was abandoned after a nuclear

comparing the anonymized data against publicly available ratings on the

privately rated films on Netflix, in the process possibly working out

Amazon's Kindle e-book may have [0]sold out in record time, but there's
still a lot of discussion about the device's merits. Neil Gaiman [1]likes
it well enough, but it's sent Robert Scoble into [2]a fit of apoplectic
rage. For a real, meaty, hands-on look at the way the device operates in
everyday life, Gamers With Jobs writer Julian Murdoch has a [3]slice of
life with the Kindle. He takes us through his Thanksgiving holiday
weekend with the device, noting the quirks (good and bad) that cropped up
with Amazon's new toy. "Short of reading in the tub, the Kindle is easier
to read in more places, positions, and situations than a physical book
... But it's far from perfect. It is expensive. The cover, which I find
completely necessary, is in desperate need of more secure attachment
(Velcro works great). The book selection is less-than-perfect, although I
imagine this will improve with every passing day. And Amazon needs
marketing help. The Kindle's launch reeked of 'get it out fast.' The
big-picture marketing efforts (like video demonstrations and [4]blurbs
from authors) were great, but simple things like communicating how
freakin' easy it is to get non-Amazon content on to the device, for free,
remain horribly misunderstood."

Firefox users are more susceptible to this attack because [2]Firefox
farms off the request directly to the QuickTime Player as a separate

Stay Lifted, Novell Vs. SCO Can Go Forward

A number of readers suggest we check out Groklaw, where PJ is reporting
that a bankruptcy judge has [0]granted Novell's request to lift the stay
so that its trial against SCO can proceed in Utah. The judge concluded
that Judge Kimball is the best one to decide how much SCO owes Novell,
and that SCO cannot make any "reorganization" plans ?€? including any "fire
sale" of assets ?€? until it knows this figure.

Google Gives Up IP of Anonymous Blogger

An anonymous reader alerts us to a story out of Israel in which Google
(its Israeli subsidiary) [0]gave up the IP address of a Blogger user
without being compelled to do so by a court. A preliminary ruling was
issued in which a court indicated that the slander the blogger was
accused of probably rose to the level of a criminal violation. Google
Israel then made a deal with the plaintiffs, local city councilmen whom
the blogger had been attacking for a year. Google disclosed the IP
address only to the court, which posted a message (Google says the
anonymous blogger got it) inviting him/her to contest the ruling
anonymously. When no response was received within 3 days, Google turned
over the IP address to the plaintiffs' lawyers.

Colleges Outsourcing Email To MS Live, Google

[0]Andy Guess tips us to his article at Inside Higher Ed offering a
detailed look at the snowballing trend of [1]colleges outsourcing their
email infrastructure, mostly to Google and Microsoft Live. Even
outsourcing just email would presage big changes in the work that IT
departments do on campus; but more such changes are on the horizon as
schools grapple with entering freshmens' already entrenched online
habits.
