RIOJA VOTED "WINE REGION OF THE YEAR"
by Wine Enthusiast magazine

Spain has been named "Wine Region of the Year" and a recipient of its 2007 Wine Star Award. In the announcement of this prestigious award, the editors of Wine Enthusiast said:

"Rioja is the leading wine region of Spain, where vine growing and winemaking have been local traditions since medieval times. A beautiful area, offering varied and rugged landscapes, Rioja's climate is ideal for grape- growing. Although Rioja's winemaking history goes back centuries and benefits from hundreds of years of experience, it is currently undergoing a stylistic revolution—or, as winemakers prefer—an "evolution." It is rich in history and traditions, but willing to adapt to modern times. It is no longer a one-product, one-style region, and, in advancing itself on the international wine map, it has done the same for Spain."

Explore Rioja and Ribera del Duero on LA DOLCE VITA WINE TOUR's new 6-day tour RIOJA ROUNDUP, and sample a stellar lineup, including Marques di Riscal, Contino, Roda, Miguel Merino, Emilio Moro, and other top names. We'll also visit the Frank Gehry–designed Bilbao Guggenheim Museum.

2008 dates: September 8-13

AIRLINE AID
Websites to help you cut through the congestion

photoIn its recent cover story "How to  Escape Airport Hell," New York magazine listed the following sites for smart travel planners:

FlightStats.com. No other site combines real-time departure and arrival information, wait times at security checkpoints, and up-to -the-minute weather reports. And it’s free.

Kayak.com. In the beginning, there were Expedia, Travelocity, and Orbitz, and finding the best fare required searching them all. Then Kayak arrived to search the search engines.

Farecast.com. This site crunches ticket data from the past 90 days to predict where prices might be going. Is it worth waiting to see if prices will fall? Now you know.

Seatguru.com. Annotated diagrams for every p*** in every major airline’s fleet, including notes on which seats in JetBlue’s exit rows fail to recline (seats 10A and 10F, in case you’re wondering).

FlyerTalk.com. The online clubhouse for road warriors, mileage runners, and inveterate frequent fliers. Not for beginners, however.

EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL: BUYER BEWARE
The New Yorker reports on Italian olive oil scams

"How to I tell if it's a good olive oil?" This is a perennial question we hear from travelers in Italy.  Our short answer is, "Don't trust the big brands." Tom Mueller's fascinating report in The New Yorker, "Slippery Business," explains why.
