  Inside: This Week in Autos
Imagining GM as a soft, fuzzy, eco-friendly company is a little bit like finding out your chain-smoking, red meat-loving uncle has gone on the patch and turned vegetarian. Yet Chevy's plug-in hybrid technology was the focus of two of our stories this week. Chevy is clearly betting heavily that its investments in hybrid technology will allow it to leapfrog green rivals Toyota and Honda by staking a claim as the world's leading producer of green cars. What's more, it is concentrating not only on reducing gas mileage, it is also aiming at producing larger hybrids, believing that the majority of its potential customers—at least in the States—want to save money at the pump but don't want to give up size and power. Of course, a production solution is still several years out and GM isn't the only auto maker throwing millions at developing alternative fuel technology. But if GM can pull it off faster, and keep the MSRP price reasonable, it could return the General to its former unquestioned pre-eminence in the auto world. That's still a few years off, though, and GM's stock slide and the success of cars like Honda?s Accord, which we also reviewed very favorably this week, suggest that GM still has a long way to go. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Let me just say before I go into this that Toyota, because of its emphasis on quality and "green" technology, the company has a target on its back when it falls short in either department. At this week's LA Auto Show, Toyota took the wraps off its new Sequoia SUV. It is bigger and thirstier than the old model. Huh? Toyota? closequote
