I'm sure when David Beckham agreed to speak to Inside Sport last Thursday he was hoping it would be as part of an England squad on its way to the European Championships next year.

He would have been looking forward to reaching 100 caps for his country, and pulling on that England shirt for one more major tournament.

Things could not have turned out more different. But when I met him at his Soccer Academy in South East London, he was surprisingly frank and positive about the future.

We talked about the current problems in English football, his own future with the national team, and his time at LA Galaxy.

Is Beckham's Mission USA still on course aftr injuries limited him to barely a handful of games this year and the team failed to qualify for the end of season play-offs?

Also on the programme, it's a case of from Hollywood, California, to Holywood, Northern Ireland, as Matt Pinsent catches up with teenage golf sensation Rory McIlroy.

The 18-year-old Ulsterman came to worldwide prominence in this year's Open Championship, where he briefly held third place on the way to winning the silver medal for top amateur.

Next year he hopes to become the youngest player to feature in the Ryder Cup.
