Wine House Cocktail Party, November 2006

Dear Criss,

Take a chance and enjoy exceptional food and wine. This week we have a special pre-release offer for a very special wine: the 2003 by Bollinger. This week is also your last opportunity to enjoy the fantastic Brasserie Lunch Special and we have featured a list of well-priced wines that can be enjoyed now. In anticipation of the festive season, there is a special end-of-year Wine House Champagne tasting that we have limited tickets to, and we unveil last week's highly anticipated wine trivia answer, once and for all.

We hope you enjoy,

From the team at Wine House

This week at Wine House - Bollinger 2003

Pre-release offer!

"The 2003 harvest was not a Grande Année (Great Year) for Bollinger. However, 2003 did produce something special. So special, in fact, that it was impossible to ignore. Even at Bollinger. But what should we do? We could not release this wine as a Grande Année. Bollinger drinkers would not understand such a change of style. So we are presenting it as "2003 by Bollinger". We are lifting the curtain on a totally one-off style and saying "Yes, this is 2003" and "Yes this is Bollinger". It is neither superior, nor inferior to Grande Année. It`s just different, and we hope the packaging reflects the uniqueness of the product." - Ghislain de Montgolfier, Chairman of the House of Bollinger.

The 2003 vintage in Champagne was one of the harshest on record. A heat wave swept much of the country creating conditions never before seen by local winemakers. Bollinger adapted to the season and, making use of their grand Champagne vineyards, produced a wine that baffled expectations and must be crowned as exceptional. Glowing reviews received include:

"FAVOURITE NEW CHAMPAGNE - Bollinger decided to commemorate the vintage by releasing this one-off rich, honeyed Champagne. Unlike the 'normal' Bollinger vintage, this is already so drinkable that further cellaring isn't required." - Max Allen, Gourmet Traveller.

"It is a lovely wine and recognisably Bollinger, with an element of barrel fermentation apparent.low in acidity very soft and upfront, released much younger than Grande Annee and commensurately approachable." - Huon Hooke, Good Weekend.

"A soft and sumptuous Champagne, with a gloriously slow-releasing pin-cushion mousse that feels utterly satisfying in the mouth.it is the vanilla-finesse of ultra-ripe Chardonnay that dominates the wine from the mid-palate to the finish. Bollinger's Chef de Cave was able to craft this sublime one-off...the result is a minor miracle!" - Tom Stevenson, UK July 2007.

"Unlike anything we have seen from Bollinger. While still dominated by pinot noir fruit, 60% total, and still with a typically rich, nutty, and barrel fermented yeasty nose, the wine is zesty and subtle on the palate showing lime, apple and melon characters. Outstanding!" - Wine House.

The 2003 by Bollinger is one of the most exclusive wines ever to be released in Australia. Very limited and available only at stores hand selected by Bollinger. We are proud to be among the few to have access to the wine and to celebrate our inclusion to the rank of Australia's best retail stores we can offer you a special pre-release price. Please order early as we anticipate the wine will be sold out very soon after, if not before, the release on the 1st of December.

$195.00 Normally | $185.00 pre release (offer ends 1st December)

Old & Rare Wines - Enjoy wine now!

Some of the real work horses of the wine world are the sub $20 wines. While aged wine is a delight, the patience taken to age wine can be more scarce than a good drinking Pinot Noir for less than $15. This week we show a list of our favourite wines that can be easily enjoyed while you wait for our wines (or your own) to achieve maturity.

Yalumba "Y" Sauvignon Blanc 2007, South Australia.

Best sub $10 wines!

Our sub $10 wine list is limited as there are few wines on the market good enough to recommend. Yalumba has a long history of providing great wines that are equally high value and this Sav Blanc is in that tradition. Light, enjoyable and an excellent price.
$8.96 in a dozen | $9.95 per bottle

Water Wheel Memsie Red 2006, Bendigo, Vic.

James Halliday 90 points!

Just a bit over the $10 price point is this ripper from Water Wheel made from Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, this is another reason why blended wines are often the best value for money as each grape contributes to make the most complete wine possible.
$11.66 in a dozen | $12.95 per bottle

Terra Felix Marsanne Roussanne 2004, Victoria.

Enjoyable wines!

Terra Felix wines are full of life and flavour. The white wine list is great value and includes a Chardonnay and this classic Rhone Valley blend of Marsanne/Roussanne that shows some mineral, limes and honey characters.
$12.56 in a dozen | $13.95 per bottle

Patricks Pinot Noir 2004, Margaret River, WA.

Real Pinot Noir for under $15!

To be honest the history of the Patricks family and vineyard is not well known at Wine House, but thankfully their Pinot Noir is well loved. Soft palate and herbal dried leaf aromatics mean this is has real pinot noir character that is serious value for money.
$13.46 in a dozen | $14.95 per bottle

Rymill "The Yearling" Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, Coonawarra, SA.
Yummy!

A classic Coonawarra producer specialising in Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, with four different styles of the prior. "The Yearling" is new from Rymil and is 60% unoaked, made thusly to allow the suppleness of the fruit to envelope the mouth. Yummy.

$13.46 in a dozen | $14.95 per bottle

Scotchman's Hill "Swan Bay" Shiraz 2006, Victoria.

Great value cool climate Shiraz!

Sourced from the cooler climates of Strathbogie and the greater Geelong region, this wine displays a bouquet of forest fruits, cedar spices and dark plums, a lengthy palate of mocha, smoked meats and a typical Victorian white pepper aftertaste.
$13.46 in a dozen | $14.95 per bottle

Pondalowie Vineyard Blend 2005, Bendigo, Vic.
James Halliday 90 points! Uncorked - "Best Red Wine"!

Another Bendigo blend. Pondalowie is winning rave reviews and fans for their wines, recently getting the nod for "Best Red Wine" in the $15 to $25 bracket from the Melbourne Age's wine magazine Uncorked. Seriously drinkable check out the reviews via the link.

$17.96 in a dozen | $19.95 per bottle

Coobara Cabernet Merlot 2005, Adelaide Hills, SA.

James Halliday 94 points!

This is a wine that can age but at a price you can drink. Rich cabernet and succulent merlot  or as James Halliday describes... "Another wine of real authority and power; French oak adds an impressive frame for the blackcurrant fruit." Great bargain stuff.
$17.96 in a dozen | $19.95 per bottle

Kilikanoon "Morts Block" Riesling 2005, Clare Valley, SA.
James Halliday 94 points!

Listed in our specials page are a number of seemingly forgotten wines we are offering at great prices. This Kilikanoon Riesling is a terrific wine with "Fine, intense line juice and green apple aromas and flavours; super long and lingering palate." (James Halliday).

Was $22.95 | Now $17.80 per bottle

Wine Trivia

Last week's question was...

According to the CIVC, how many grape varieties are allowed to be used in the production of Champagne?

The answer is four. Tradition and agreement by the houses of Champagne dictate that Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier may be used in the production of the wine with a fourth grape variety permitted, but not yet agreed upon. Well done to William who gave us the three and mentioned that small plantings of Pinot Blanc, Arbane and Petit Meslier exist but are not sanctioned by the 1927 CIVC guidelines.

This week we ask...

I'm a tall man with a wealth of wine experience. I made some famous wines for an old Clare Valley winery before leaving in 1985 to start my own wine label with an eleven acre vineyard and a contract to buy fruit from one of the oldest vineyards in the valley. Who am I?

For your chance to win a $30 Lunch Special at the Brasserie, or a $30 voucher at Old & Rare Wines, email your correct answer to sales@winehouse.com.au! Extra consideration is given to detailed answers where many correct replies are received in a short time period.
