Avoid Illegal Russian crab in U.S. Market; Oil spill causing concerns with Dungeness in California
Alaskan Crab is in high demand right now, especially with the recent developments in the news! If you're unaware, The Hansen Brothers, made famous through their popularity on the show "The Deadliest Catch" have been under scrutiny from Alaskan king crab packers. Available from Wal-Mart, this crab has been promoted to be Alaskan crab-when in reality it is product of Russia. This is raising concerns within the industry, due to the lack of policing and quality of non-Alaskan products, due to water pollution and other regional effects. The Monterey Bay Aquarium recommends that consumers avoid Russian King Crab, which consists of more than 90% of the crab in the U.S. market.
Further south, an oil spill caused by a tanker colliding into a piling on the Golden Gate Bridge, causing Californian Dungeness Crabbers to request a delay in the start of the crabbing season due to concerns of oil pollution from the largest oil spill in 20 years hasn't slowed the delivery of crab to the market. Many are stunned to find that only a small portion of the coast has been banned for harvesting crab, while the toxins from the spill have polluted further.
