| Dear Criss,
We have tasted more than 50 different Beaujolais over the past year and the cru of Brouilly stood out above the rest. The 2005 vintage truly confirmed that Brouilly is the "Great Cru" among the ten Cru wines of Beaujolais and we are pleased to offer six magnificent Brouilly (BREW-yee) for you to enjoy.
Located at the foot of Mount Brouilly, the Cru of Brouilly is the largest of the Beaujolais Crus. The soils are composed of granite and alluvial sand with 3,000 acres planted under vine. The annual production is approximately 10 million bottles from 360 winegrowers; representing 20% of the total area of the 10 cru vineyards.
As with all Beaujolais wines, harvest is done entirely by hand, preventing damage to the grapes and enabling the best selection. The grapes are placed in vats without being crushed, enabling fermentation to occur inside each individual grape. Pressing occurs after maceration in the vats; this is the Beaujolais Vinification method. However, the true art of vinification is to press the grapes at the right moment and then to correctly blend the free run juices with the pressed juices.
Among the 10 crus of Beaujolais, Brouilly is said to be grapey, while Fleurie is said to have the aroma of violets and Saint-Amour of peach. Typically, Brouilly, Côte de Brouilly, Fleurie, Saint-Amour, and Chenas, share a common elegance and fragrant delicacy, whereas Juliènas, Morgon, and Moulin-à-Vent, are fuller, have a deeper flavor and have more lasting power. Chiroubles has a lacy texture and suppleness.

2005 Georges Duboeuf Brouilly Domaine de Combillaty 11.99
From one of Georges Duboeuf's most consistent producers, the 2005 Brouilly Domaine de Combillaty is another in a long string of successes for this vigneron. Its wonderful red and black cherry aromas lead to a medium to full-bodied core of sweet, plush, intensely expressive fruit. Red Cherries, roses, and raspberries are found in this seductive effort's pure and complex character. It is wonderfully concentrated, fresh, deep, and long in the finish. Projected maturity: now-2014. 92 Points, Robert M. Parker, Jr.'s The Wine Advocate, Issue 165 |
2005 Georges Duboeuf Brouilly Chateau de la Perriere 11.99
Revealing delicate black cherry aromas, the recently bottled 2005 Brouilly Chateau de la Perriere is a muscular wine armed with impressive quantities of black fruits. Medium to full-bodied and concentrated, this structured effort is big, broad, and filled with satiny layers of blackberries. Drink it between 2008 and 2014. 91 Points, Robert M. Parker, Jr.'s The Wine Advocate, Issue 165 |
2005 Georges Duboeuf Brouilly Domaine de Pisse Vieille 12.99
...produced from a south-facing vineyard with one of the all-time great names. Legend has it that a slightly deaf, devout Catholic lady named Marionette misunderstood her priest as telling her during confession to go and piss no more ("allez, et ne pissez plus") when he actually instructed her to sin no more ("allez, et ne pechez plus"). After a few days her pain was so intense that her husband went to see the priest who, surprised, repeated his instructions. The husband understanding what had happened, raced home yelling "Pisse vieille!" (Literally translated as "Piss, old woman.") This wine's soy-laced aromatics reveal black cherries and blackberries. On the palate it is medium-bodied, silky-textured, and offers considerable blackberry flavors before tightening in the finish. It will require some cellaring. Drink it between 2008 and 2012. 89 Points, Robert M. Parker, Jr.'s The Wine Advocate, Issue 165 |
2005 Georges Duboeuf Brouilly Chateau de Nervers 12.99
Waxy black cherries emerge from the nose of the 2005 Brouilly Chateau de Nervers. A medium to full-bodied effort with impressive depth and concentration of fruit, it slathers the palate with sweet black fruits that linger in its prolonged finish. Rich, powerful, and fleshy, it will be at its peak between 2007 and 2014. 90-92 Points, Robert M. Parker, Jr.'s The Wine Advocate, Issue 165 |
2005 Georges Viornery Brouilly 13.99 (10% off by the case)
The 2005 wines of Beaujolais can be spectacular and those are not to be missed. As prices of Pinot Noir creep up around the globe Gamay Noir planted on granite soils offers relief and this Grand Cru Beaujolais does just that! Early in March prior to bottling, I was able to convince Mr. Viornery that YOU wanted his wine non-filtered. Is 2005 better than 2003 in Beaujolais? Your call! 92 Points, Robert Sprentall, B-21 Wine Company |
2005 Mommessin Brouilly Chateau de Pierreux 14.99
Chateau de Pierreux, a 190-acre estate in Brouilly, is one of the finest domaines in the Beaujolais region. Low yields and vines varying in age from 30-50 years show off the deep black cherry color, crushed berry nose, gorgeous palate of mouth filling brambly fruit, lifted acidity and ripe tannins. Irresistible now, but it will keep. A brilliant wine from one the greatest vintages in Beaujolais history. 92 points, Mark Stitt, B-21 Wine Company
