GOOGLE RELEASES ANDROID SDK PREVIEW
As expected, Google has released an "early look" version of its SDK
(software development kit) for mobile phones. The Eclipse-based Android
SDK lets users write Java applications that run on Dalvik, a virtual
machine designed to run on top of Linux in embedded applications.

LINUX IM PAD BEEFS UP, INVITES HACKING
Zipit Wireless has updated its Linux-based, WiFi-connected instant
messaging client for kids and other frequent IM users. The new $150
Zipit Wireless Messenger 2 (Z2) adds a color screen, a faster processor,
and expansion interfaces likely to prove popular among both kids and
Linux hardware hackers (Is there a difference?).

30,000 PALM APPS COMING TO NOKIA WEBPADS
Some 30,000 applications originally written for the Palm Pilot PDA
(personal digital assistant) will soon run on Nokia's Linux-based web
tablets. The applications will run on top of a virtual machine (VM)
currently being beta tested by Access for Nokia's 770, N800, and N810
Internet tablets.

FPGA SOFTCORE GAINS MMU, RUNS "FULL LINUX"
Xilinx has added the option of a memory management unit (MMU) to the
royalty-free 32-bit soft-core processor it offers for its FPGA
(field-programmable gate array) chips. The MMU allows the MicroBlaze v7
softcore to run complex OSes such as Linux, including LynuxWorks's
commercially supported BlueCat-ME (MicroBlaze Edition) distribution.

LINUX DEVICES MANAGE BROADBAND POWERLINE NETWORK
Mini-ITX systems running Linux will soon enable residents of rural
Michigan to access the Internet over their electrical power lines at
broadband speeds. The systems are also enabling the utility provider
there to read meters, monitor environmental factors, and diagnose
outages remotely.

LINUX-BASED SDR TARGETS 700MHZ FEMTOCELLS
Vanu Inc. and BitWave Semiconductor have demonstrated a Linux-based
software-defined radio (SDR) for wireless Femtocell base stations.
Designed to handle the 700MHz spectrum due to be auctioned in January,
the SDR offers simultaneous operation of multiple standards, enabling a
fast transition to multifaceted Femtocells, says Vanu.

CAR COMPUTER RUNS RED FLAG LINUX
DingCheng Electronics has announced a GPS-enabled PC that fits "double
DIN" stereo bays. The CarPC 102 has a 4x45W amp, and runs Red Flag Linux
or Windows on a 1.1GHz Pentium M processor, with 256MB RAM, 40GB hard
drive, DVD/CD-RW drive, and 7-inch WXGA touchscreen display.

LINUX GAS PUMP PRINTS GOOGLE MAPS
In further proof that you can never escape Google or interactive
marketing, Gilbarco Veeder-Root announced Google support for its Encore
gas pump's interactive displays. Gilbarco's Linux-based Applause media
system now offers printable Google local business search, maps, driving
directions, and coupons.

WORLD'S FIRST PICO-ITX CASE?
Logic Supply has unveiled what it's calling the world's first case for
Via's tiny, Linux-compatible pico-ITX motherboard. The fanless Serener
GS-L08 is equipped with a 2.5-inch hard drive bay and a heat pipe, yet
measures only 5.8 x 2.0 x 4.3 inches.

REPORTS FORECAST GPS PROLIFERATION
Low-cost GPS chipsets will increasingly be integrated into mobile
devices, according to reports just released by two major market research
firms. While apparently disagreeing on the exact numbers, both ABI
Research and In-Stat forecast extremely strong growth between now and 2011.
