The Gibson SJ-200: A Descendant of Country and Rock and Roll Royalty
The Gibson SJ-200: A Descendant of Country and Rock and Roll Royalty

Plenty of classic Gibson models started life as custom-made guitars designed to suit the needs of major stars of their day. Perhaps none fits this template so prominently, however, as the King of the Flat-Tops, the SJ-200. Gibsons original Super Jumbo went from being the ultimate badge of honor for country and Western stars of the prewar years to pumping out the rhythm of rock and roll in the 50s and beyond, and remains the flat-top to beat for that big, bold thrang.

In the 1930s, Hollywoods Western stars were the pop idols of their day, and rather than trying to outdo each other with bling and Cristal, they gunned it out with rhinestone suits and pearl-encrusted guitars. Prior to 1937, the guitar in question was very often a round-shouldered Gibson dreadnought—still the Jumbo of its day—until one such matinee idol commissioned Gibson to build something considerably grander and kicked the whole game up a notch.

Jonas Brothers: Pop Punks Fastest Rising Band to Record New Album on Gibson Bus
Jonas Brothers: Pop Punks Fastest Rising Band to Record New Album on Gibson Bus
Rock history has a long tradition of sibling bands, but the Jonas Brothers are proving to be a phenomenon unlike any other. Boasting an album that debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard charts, a single (S.O.S.) that shot to the top of iTunes, and a forthcoming TV series, whiz kids Kevin (19), Joe (17), and Nick (14) are fast transcending the teen market niche. A slice of guitar-drenched pop-punk, the self-titled Jonas Brothers CD is rife with soaring melodies, close harmonies, and crunchy, hook-laden riffs delivered in the twin-guitar format of a Les Paul and an SG. Small wonder some have called the Brothers a family friendly version of Green Day.

Not unlike Green Day, whose Billie Joe Armstrong has a signature model Les Paul Junior, the Brothers have gotten in thick with Gibson. On November 1, the announcement came that the Jonas Brothers and Gibson will partner for the next Jonas Brothers CD, as the band tours the U.S. aboard the Gibson tour bus. Fully stocked with state-of-the-art equipment, the Gibson tour bus will serve as the setting for the Brothers to write new music, practice new songs, and put down tracks for the yet-to-be-titled album. A newly developed websitewww.bandinabus.comhas been set up to provide updates regarding tour bus destinations and offer communications from the band.

The Goo Goo Dolls Johnny Rzeznik: The Gibson Interview
(Free MP3 Stream!)

The Goo Goo Dolls Johnny Rzeznik: The Gibson Interview
Hard to believe, but more than 20 years have passed since then-aspiring guitarist Johnny Rzeznik and his bass-player pal Robby Takac formed the Goo Goo Dolls. Sitting atop the mid 80s post-punk wave, the Buffalo, New York-based group wasted no time establishing their indie credibility with a series of albums awash in thrashy guitars and garage pop sensibility. Critical raves came early, but only with Name and Iris—two change-of-pace acoustic ballads penned by Rzeznik in the mid 90s—did the Goo Goo Dolls commercial fortunes match the heaps of praise.

In the decade since, Rzeznik and his bandmates have happily built on that success while holding true to their indie roots. The evidence is there on Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 - The Singles, the bands just-released first-ever compilation disc. Listening to the Goo Goo Dolls Top 10 hits anew, one cant help marveling at the spot-on mix of radio pop jangle (Slide, Broadway), sprite balladry (Sympathy, Black Balloon), and wall-of-guitar bluster (Stay With You, Dizzy).

Throughout the album, Rzezniks versatility as a guitarist and his predilection for alternate tunings form the backbone for songwriting steeped in old-school rock melodies. With the Goo Goo Dolls retrospective set to hit record stores, an odds and sods collection in the works, and Rzezniks just-begun stint as a guest judge on Fox TVs The Next Great American Band, its a fine time to assess the groups career thus far.

Styxs Tommy Shaw: The Gibson Interview (Free MP3 Stream!)
Styxs Tommy Shaw: The Gibson Interview
When its finally time for Tommy Shaw to cash in his chips, its unlikely hell have too many regrets about his life in music. Few musicians, after all, can say that theyve sang and played lead guitar in a multi-platinum rock band, composed classic songs that still endure as radio staples, and toured the world many times over.

More than two decades removed from the heyday of Styx, the band for which Shaws best known, he has absolutely nothing left to prove. But he still finds time to tour with Styx (a 21st-century incarnation of the band sans keyboardist and vocalist Dennis DeYoung), which remains a popular summer concert draw. Hes also gearing up for a series of tour dates with Jack Blades, the former Night Ranger bassist and one-fourth of 90s supergroup Damn Yankees, of which Shaw was also a member. Shaw is hitting the road with Blades in support of their joint release Influence, a collection of harmony-laden covers like Seals & Crofts Summer Breeze, Steely Dans Dirty Work, Buffalo Springfields For What Its Worth, and songs by Simon & Garfunkel and the Mamas & the Papas, among others.

The Influence project started innocently enough for the former Damn Yankees bandmates. They initially wanted to do another album of original materiallike their 1995 collaboration Hallucinationbut they simply couldnt find the time. We were just too busy, Shaw recalls. But Jack called me up to sing with him on his [eponymous 2004] solo record, and he was recording the old Spirit tune, Natures Way. I went to see him, and the track was already done. I just sang with him, and it was finished. And there we were on a record, doing a cover. It was so simple to do.

Les Paul-Signed Les Paul to Be Raffled Off for Charity
Les Paul-Signed Les Paul to Be Raffled Off for Charity
The holder of a single lucky raffle ticket will own something that for many guitar aficionados is simply beyond imagination: a beautiful 2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard thats signed by none other than Les Paul himself. To honor his late daughter and raise scholarship funds, Earl Hurrey of The National Association for Music Education is giving you a chance to win his autographed Les Paul Standard.

The raffle is a fundraiser for the Caitlin Merie Hurrey Memorial Scholarship Fund, named in honor of Caitlin Merie Hurrey, who was nine years old and in the fourth grade at Huntingtown Elementary School in Maryland when she died in an automobile accident on October 31, 1995. The fund, which honors Caitlins love of music and education, supports four scholarships annually.

The guitar is being raffled by Caitlins father, Earl Hurrey, who is the deputy executive director for business development of Reston, Virginia-based MENC: The National Association for Music Education. Hurrey calls the autographed Les Paul one of my most prized possessions and is raffling the guitar this year to mark what would have been Caitlins 21st birthday. He hopes to raise $25,000 for the scholarship fund by selling 1,000 raffle tickets for $25 each.

Guitars Not Guns: The Little Charity That Could, and Did
Guitars Not Guns: The Little Charity That Could, and Did
Retired musician Ray Nelson was never a rock star. In fact, he didnt even play the guitar professionally. Yet that hasnt stopped the veteran tenor sax player from launching a fret-focused charitable organization that not only gives kids a strong musical foundationin an era when public school arts programs are threatened by funding cutsbut also provides the beginning instrument with which to build upon that education.

Nelsons home-grown Guitars Not Guns Music Program celebrated its fifth anniversary recently and continues to steadily expand. The Palm Beach County city of Lake Worth, Florida, recently proclaimed October 21 as Guitars Not Guns Day in the community, holding a benefit concert at a local club and giving each of the citys first 10 Guitars Not Guns-sponsored students a guitar. In conjunction with partners the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and longtime sponsors the Gibson Foundation, Guitars Not Guns will soon be offering guitars and lessons to kids in New Orleans, after being delayed by the ravages of Hurricane Katrina. Planning for future chapters in Biloxi, Mississippi and Iowa is already underway.

Tom Scholzs Top 10 Favorite Albums of All Time
Tom Scholzs Top 10 Favorite Albums of All Time
The death of longtime lead singer Brad Delp this past March cast a pall over Bostons future. But even if the rock bands mastermind Tom Scholz never makes another album, his legacy as a trailblazing guitarist is assured. Songs such as More Than a Feeling, Peace of Mind, and Dont Look Back are part of the rock lexicon, powered by the searing sounds Scholz coaxed from his beloved 68 Les Paul Goldtops. Not surprisingly, Scholzs all-time favorite albums feature players also known to prefer Les Pauls.

1) Jeff Beck: Truth

2) Led Zeppelin: I

3) Led Zeppelin: II

4) James Gang: Rides Again

5) Iron Butterfly: Heavy
