Credit David Bowie with having an eye for talent. Before art collectors and design mavens began coveting Rex Ray's work, Bowie handpicked this San Francisco-based artist to design his albums starting in 1999. Over the span of his career, Ray has designed posters for the Rolling Stones, Radiohead, R.E.M., Joe Satriani, and Beck, among others. But Rex Ray is more than just a graphic designer with a rock-and-roll habit. His highly collectible, color-bursting artwork graces the walls of high-design hotels, world-class museums, and hip restaurants across the country. Abstract and handcrafted, with a retro-futuristic mid-century feel, Ray's work is a rare combination of pop sophistication, commercial design, and handmade craft. Or, as acclaimed author Douglas Coupland puts it, "unslick, but superslick at the same time." REX RAY: ART + DESIGN is the first monograph to survey his multi-faceted work in various media—including paper cutouts, mixed media collages, paintings, digital prints, and his graphic design and music packaging. And to celebrate the book's release, Rex Ray is taking his show on the road. Gallery 16 in San Francisco is mounting a solo exhibition of his artwork that runs now through December 30 (they'll also host an event for Rex at the Aqua Art Fair in Miami on Dec 4), and Jonathan Adler stores in New York, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are hosting book-signings with the artist throughout the fall. For exhibition details visit www.gallery16.com, and for a full listing of event dates and locations, visit www.chroniclebooks.com/rexray. WIN ORIGINAL ARTWORK BY REX RAY! Simply click here to fill out the form and you'll be entered into the drawing that will take place Jan. 31, 2008. The winners will be notified via email or mail. |
