America at a Crossroads
Great PBS site for some current current-events discussions.
http://www.educationworld.com/awards/2007/r1107-09.shtml

REVIEW: A+
This site is the complement to the PBS Television series by the same name. Although it is geared to a general audience, there is lots of content appropriate for high school students. The series consist of fourteen documentaries that explore such topics as firsthand accounts of American servicemen and women through their own words, the complicated mixture of emotions that characterizes European views about Americans, and the U.S. strategy in Iraq. Visitors to the site can view video clips of the documentaries, watch the video diaries, explore an interactive timeline of events that shaped the modern Middle East, and download a discussion guide. Educators will want to check out the educators’ page for middle and high school lesson plans and a classroom integration guide as well as additional resources.

U.S.South Pole Station
This National Science Foundation South Pole site is c-o-o-l.
http://www.educationworld.com/awards/2007/r1107-07.shtml

REVIEW: A+
The U.S. South Station site is a special report on the research underway at the NSF’s Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station that sits at the Earth’s axis, atop a constantly shifting continental ice sheet several miles thick. Visitors to the site can explore why the South Pole is a unique place for studying astronomy, air and ozone, seismic science, off-world simulations and life sciences and view photographs, diagrams and videos of the new station and how it was constructed. The video tour provides a look at the challenges of living and working in such a forbidding environment and how the challenges are overcome. Included are photographs, videos, illustrations, stories about the station and its crew, a fact sheet of information on the instruments used, a timeline of important dates in South Pole exploration, and a live Webcam.

Animal Bytes
Sharp site from the great San Diego zoo.
http://www.educationworld.com/awards/2007/r1107-05.shtml

REVIEW: A+
Teachers and students will be happy to find Animal Bytes. It offers information and a host of multimedia files on amphibians, birds, mammals, reptiles, and insects that will support students reading, writing, and science skills. The animal records include quick facts (class, order, family, genera, species, etc.), fun facts, articles, photos, sounds, videos, iZoofari Chats (interviews with zoo workers), and more. Visitors to the site can also find descriptions of animal classifications, habitats and ecosystems, and where animals are found geographically including interactive maps and blogs. The texts include hyperlinks to the Zoo Glossary. Teachers will want to click on the “Education” link at the top of the page and scroll down to find the link to curricular materials such as Wildlife Wizards, Butterflies, and the Lifestyle of the Komodo Dragon, and classroom activities that cover a variety of topics. All materials include a suggested grade level.
