LEADING OFF
Following The Script
By Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter

It was as well choreographed as any production by Bob Fosse or Gene Kelly.

The lead characters were elegant, played to the audience well and gave them everything they could possibly want.

Except a real "moment".

A Broadway musical? A celeb's seemingly effortless stroll down the "red carpet" for the paparazzi?

Nope, this extravaganza was a "presser" (press conference) to introduce LA-LA's next "American Idol", new Dodger manager Joe Torre.

Not The Typical "Bye Week"
By K.C. Alfred

On what was supposed to be a relaxing Sunday off due to a Chargers bye week, the last thing I expected was to be covering a repeat of the Cedar Fire, which was the largest fire in state history, just four years earlier.

This time around, four fires would burn nearly 300,000 acres, destroy over 1,300 structures and force over 500,000 people to evacuate from their homes, and that was only in San Diego County. Where do you even begin to cover an event this size?

Many great images were made during the fires. Photographs of 50-foot flames, water dropping helicopters, and fire victims crying amongst the ruins of their burned down homes get most of the photo attention. But oftentimes, heroic acts don't get the play they deserved because they simply didn't make dramatic photos.

Three Stories From The Sports Shooter Academy Multimedia Boot Camp
(Editor's Note: The Sports Shooter Newsletter asked three participants in the SSA Multimedia Boot Camp to relate their experiences and how the new wave of visual story-telling will affect their careers in photojournalism.)

NFL Films - Style Audio and The Making of "Jack the Umpire"
By Carlos Delgado

The idea was born at halftime at the Chargers game a week before the Sports Shooter Academy Multimedia Boot Camp. I was sitting on the grass talking to fellow photographer Matt Brown about the upcoming workshop, and a little light went off in my head. I said, "Wouldn't it be cool if I put a microphone on a referee for the game?" Indeed, it was a cool idea. I had a week to work on it.

My gear for audio collecting is an Olympus WS-300M Digital Voice Recorder and an Audio-Technica ATR35s Lavalier Microphone (mini newscaster-style mic that clips on a shirt). The plan was to come up with a way to have the recorder securely clipped on the ref's belt and have cables and everything else out of the way. I borrowed my sister's cell phone case and with a Velcro strap, I got everything to fit in snugly.

It's All About The Audio
By Susánica Tam

I first heard the mantra from my friend Chuck when I hitched a ride down from a day of shooting at Rocky Mountain National Park this summer. I was exhausted, bedraggled from dragging gear up to 13,000' and dehydrated from dismissing water as too heavy to carry and therefore not a necessity. Chuck is a filmmaker who is finishing school with a specialization in audio technology, a concentration that few people I know have focused on. As he drove, we discussed our work.

"Audio without the video = radio. Video without the audio = a surveillance camera," he explained.  It took a few minutes to sink in until I got the point: who wants to sit around and watch silent footage of surveillance tape? That has a certain creepy connotation. On the other hand, listening to those people on NPR? Well, not only does everyone assume all those reporters are smart, but their storytelling and use of natural sound is so good that listeners can rehash it convincingly enough to come across as well-informed.

Beyond Ref Ass
By Jarod Opperman

"I've got nothing."

I was saying it to myself. I was hearing it from others. I just didn't want to believe it. I was kneeling on the sidelines at the Fullerton College v. Palomar College game dwelling on the futility of my efforts after a 15-hour drive, an entire day of multimedia training at SSA Multimedia Boot Camp, and almost an entire day of shooting.

It wasn't that I couldn't come up with an angle for my piece. I just couldn't think of anything completely original. I hate doing what's been done. I figured most people would default to game-action pieces and I didn't feel like being part of the majority.

So there I was, pretending to shoot something other than action so the teachers would think I had a story, when Bryan Crowe brought up how much "ref ass" he had gotten during the game.

Dissecting Basic Training
By David Carson and Elie Gardner, St. Louis Post - Dispatch

From photographer' David Carson's point of view:
I was surrounded by a bunch of young Army recruits with freshly shaved heads and slightly nervous looks on their faces. They were at the start of nine weeks of basic training and in a way, so was I. Only they were issued a rifle, and I was handed a video camera. None of us could shoot straight with our newly issued equipment.

From editor Elie Gardner's point of view:
 Phil and David hit the ground running before basic training started. The Army gave them names of recruits from the St. Louis area. After a couple of dead ends, they came across Ben Corbett, who would become one of two main characters. They were able to spend time with him before he left for Fort Leonard Wood. He and his squad became the entry point for the package and gave Phil and David a chance to build a relationship with Corbett before he arrived at Fort Leonard Wood, about two hours southwest of St. Louis.

IN THE BAG
Multimedia Shooter Traveling In Beijing
By Nhat Meyer

San Jose Mercury News Reporter John Boudreau and I were sent to Beijing, China in June for two weeks to do stories that would run roughly one year before the 2008 Olympic Games are to start.

Two weeks may seem like a lot of time but it goes by quickly, we were working on five different stories, Beijing and the Olympics, migrant workers, Beijing Sports School, Beijing architecture and a travel story. I shot video and stills for each story.

We stayed at the Comfort Inn which was actually only 4 floors of a 12 story building which included a Hyundai dealership in the lobby and a karaoke bar on the second floor (I did not buy a car or go to the karaoke bar) and various other businesses on the other floors.

What did I bring with me:
Cameras:
Canon EOS-1d Mark II
Canon 20d
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 (doing a review for photographyreview.com)
Lenses:
Canon 16-35 f2.8
Canon 24-70 f2.8
Canon 70-200 f2.8
Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6
Canon 24 tilt shift f3.5
Other:
Sony HDV 1080i (the model I use was discontinued several years ago)
Edirol Roland R-09 audio recorder

Sports Shooter News & Notes
By Sports Shooter Staff
Are you looking for an opportunity to shoot real sports, become inspired, network and learn from some of the best working photographers today in a workshop environment that is both challenging and fun?

Sports Shooter Academy V will be held March 5 - 9, 2008 in Southern California and offers all of that and much, much more.

"It's real events, in real time, with real editors," said USA TODAY staff photographer Jack Gruber, a faculty member of SSA IV. "It's like an Olympics because there are multiple events in a day and you're going to edit on deadline. It shows you what it's like to work in real time, in the real world."

With the cooperation of the NCAA Division I Big West Conference, the shooting schedule for Sports Shooter Academy V will include:
* Men's basketball
* Women's basketball
* Baseball
* Track & field (Ben Brown Invitational)
* Softball (Long Beach Invitational Softball Tournament
* Tennis
* Water polo
* Men's volleyball

Also on the workshop shooting schedule will be events like beach volleyball, boxing and rugby.

Classroom sessions at previous workshops have included: using remotes, digital workflow, portrait lighting, arena lighting and sports picture stories.

The Academy faculty confirmed at this time includes:
* Matt Brown, Southern California freelance photographer
* Donald Miralle, Getty Images
* Wally Skalij, Los Angeles Times
* Sean Haffey, San Diego Union-Tribune
* Michael Goulding, Orange County Register
* Myung J. Chun, Los Angeles Times
* Robert Hanashiro, USA TODAY (and Sports Shooter founder)

Canon USA, Samy's Camera and Think Tank Photo have all committed to supporting Sports Shooter Academy V.

"It is wonderful that all of these companies share our desire for photography education," said Hanashiro, "Their support of this workshop helps make it accessible to those people that it would most help and is a tribute to their dedication to photographers, especially students."

Participants in the Sports Shooter Academy will have three full days of shooting events throughout Southern California. Faculty members will be present at all events, offering their insights, shooting tips and any other help participants need while covering these sports.

The evenings are spent editing the day's work, while receiving one-on-one critiques from the faculty and area photographers and picture editors. The best work of the day will be recognized during the daily slideshows. Prizes will be given out to the best photographs made daily and for the best work produced overall during The Academy.

"We try to make the experience at The Academy as educational and inspiring as possible," said Hanashiro, "We want the participants not just shooting photographs, but seeing things differently and really thinking about their approach to covering sports. That's why we're putting on this workshop and why we have such a great group of photographers on the faculty."

As an added bonus, the judging of the Sports Shooter Newsletter Annual Contest will be held in conjunction with SSA V. Participants in the workshop will be able to watch and listen as the workshop faculty critique the contest finalists and select the top sports photographs of the year. The open judging of the Annual Contest is always a great learning experience with lively debate, sharp comments and praise throughout the session.

Registration fees for the 5-day Sports Shooter Academy is $575 for professional photographers and $475 for full-time university and college students.

Sports Shooter News & Notes:
Sports Shooter Newsletter Annual Contest Details Announced;
Deadline Super Bowl Sunday - February 3, 2008
By Sports Shooter Staff

So you think you made a great sports photograph this year?

The Sports Shooter Newsletter Annual Contest is again trying to find the best sports photographs of the year and you can help by entering.

This year's contest will feature five categories, plus the Photo of the Year:
1) Best Action Photo
2) Best No Pro, No College
3) Best Sports feature
4) Best Sports Picture Story
5) Best Student Sports Photo
6) Photograph of the Year

The deadline for the Sports Shooter Annual Contest is midnight (Pacific Time) Super Bowl Sunday Feb. 3, 2008.

The Sports Shooter Newsletter Annual Contest is sponsored by Lowepro and Adorama Camera.

"Thanks to John Riley from Lowepro and Jeff Snyder from Adorama for their support of this contest," said Sports Shooter founder Robert Hanashiro, "These companies share my dedication to sports photography and with their help we will be recognizing some of the best work made during the year."

The Best Action Photo is any image depicting peak game action on the field of play or within the arena or stadium holding the event.

Best No Pro, No College entries should be images from a sports event that does not involve a professional or major college team. The spirit of this category is to recognize work produced from non-major sports, leagues or teams. This could be high school, junior college or even little league events.

"Sports Feature" entries can be any image that does center on game action. This category should include photographs of jubilation and dejection, as well as portraits.

The Best Student Sports Photo category is open to FULL-TIME students or students working in an internship and at the time the entry was made. Entries for this category can be any sports - related images, action or feature.

Best Sports Picture Story entries should contain no more than 10 photographs and should have a defined story related to sports or athletes. Photographs should be ordered (labeled) in the way the photographer wants the entry to be viewed. Complete captions are important. "Photo essays" are also eligible to be entered in this category.

The Photo of the Year entries will be gathered from the winners of the other contest categories and will receive the top prize from Sports Shooter. YOU DO NOT SEND ENTRIES IN FOR THIS CATEGORY.

All entries must have been taken during calendar year 2007.

You can see all of the winning entries in the previous contests on SportsShooter.com: http://www.sportsshooter.com/2006_contest_winners/index.html
WHO CAN ENTER:
The Sports Shooter Contest is open to newsletter subscribers and members of SportsShooter.com only.

If you receive the monthly e-mail version of the Sports Shooter Newsletter or you're a member of SportsShooter.com, you are eligible to enter the contest. If you've been reading Sports Shooter on the web only, you can subscribe via the website (http://www.sportsshooter.com/subscribe_newsletter.html) and request to be placed on the mailing list. SportsShooter.com members in good standing are also eligible to enter.

IMAGE PREPARATION
Size:
We recommend all images be prepared in Adobe Photoshop. Images should be sized at 72 DPI with the largest dimension NO LARGER than 15 inches. Files should be saved as JPEGs at a quality setting of 8 (or medium). Check baseline optimized when saving if available.

File Name:
Decide on a unique photographer's code of 4 to 6 letters, to be used to label each of your entries. Your entries should be first labeled with the number of the category: 1 - Best Action Photo; 2 - No Pro, No College; 3 - No Ball; 4 - Sports Picture Story; 5 - Student Sports Photo --- followed by your unique code; followed by sequential two-digit numbers corresponding to the number of photos you are entering in that category.

EXAMPLE:
3rodmar01.jpg ("3" = Ball category; "rodmar" is the unique photographer code; "01" indicates it is your first entry in this category.)

ANOTHER EXAMPLE:
4bradm07.jpg ("4" = Sports Picture Story category; "bradm" is the unique photographer code; "07" is the number of the photograph in the picture story.)

Captions:
A complete caption is required for each entry. Your caption should include the location the photo was taken, the date it was shot, ID's and your byline. This information should be written in the "File Info" portion of the image in Photoshop.

EXAMPLE:
Honolulu, HI - 11/10/2007: University of Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennen celebrates with teammates after throwing a 73-yard touchdown against Fresno State in the 3rd quarter at Aloha Stadium. Hawaii went on to a 63-14 win over the Bulldogs. Brennen was 52 of 67 passing for 832 yards and 7 touchdowns, setting school records in each category. Hawaii moved to a perfect 9-0 on the season.
Photo by Jordan Murph

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: In the "File info" of your entry, make sure you type your full name in the "Author" field and your email address in the "Author Title" field. (If you have an older version of Photoshop or are using a different image editing software, make sure this info is listed somewhere in the "File Info".)

Submitting your entry:
Entries are to be submitted by e-mail and must be received by midnight (Pacific Time) on Feb. 3, 2008, Super Bowl Sunday. Entries are limited to 10 per photographer. A picture story counts as a single entry. Email entries to: contest2006@sportsshooter.com.

In the "Subject" field of the email header, type in "Contest Entry" followed by the number of entries attached to the email. For instance if you have 3 entries attached out of 6 total, type in the Subject field: "Contest Entry 3 of 6".

You can enter an image in just one category. For instance, you cannot enter your cool prep football photograph in both the "Best Action" category and " Best No Pro, No College ".

Failure to follow the rules for labeling, captioning and preparing entries will result in disqualification. Files that are sized too large will not be accepted. Send entries to: contest2006@sportsshooter.com.

Double-Check Your Entry
Before e-mailing your entries, please take a few minutes to double check that you've sized your images correctly, have a complete caption in the file info and the entry is labeled correctly. ALSO: Please virus scan your entry.

Failure to follow any of the entry rules will result in the disqualification of your entry. Also if you submit an entry into the wrong category, it is up to the judges' discretion to move it to the appropriate category.

The finals of the Newsletter Annual Contest judging will be held in conjunction with the Sports Shooter Academy in March 2008.

Hitting The RoadŠIn More Ways Than One
By Darren Carroll

I honestly don't know what possessed me to do it, other than the fact that I'd given up a nearly two pack-a-day cigarette habit a few months back and was a little worried about putting on weight. But one day about two years ago I reached into my closet for a ratty old pair of Nikes, dug around for a pair of sweats and a beat-up T-shirt, and started running down my driveway. No experience, no prior training, and, most importantly, no real reason. I just started going. I didn't last long, mind you--I was winded once I got to the front of my neighborhood and had to walk back. Checking it against my car's odometer later, I discovered that I'd managed to go 1.2 miles.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S TOY BOX
Nikon D3 Users Report
By Matt Brown

"Hello D3!"
Those were the words that came from my mouth after removing it from the box. I was able to use the new Nikon D3 for two weeks. During that time I did six soccer games, four volley games, three football games, one ice hockey game, two water polo games and a wedding.

From my last review of the Nikon D2Xs in July 2006, we all waited and wanted the next big thing. One thing we D2Xs users wanted was more frames per second and maybe even a higher useable ISO.

A Dad's Top 10 Reasons For Loving Football
By Gary Bogdon

After covering hundreds of high school, college, and professional football games in my career, the 2007 football season brought something new to me.  My 10 year old son began playing his first season of Pop Warner football for the Mighty Mites and being a dad, I was reminded of why I love this game so much.  NFL games are awesome, College football is exciting, but there's nothing like Pop Warner and watching your own kids play.
