Call for Proposals: Development on the Move - Measuring and Optimizing the Economic and Social Impacts of Migration

This global project in partnership with the Institute for Public Policy Research (ippr), United Kingdom aims to contribute to research and policymaking by providing a better understanding of the impacts of migration on development. Six commissioned research teams will each undertake a study examining the impacts of international migration on development in their chosen country of study.

Each study involves two key components:

  • Household survey examining developmental impacts of international migration on the country in question
  • 50-100 page country report analyzing both the developmental impacts and the role of policy in enhancing the positive effects of migration while minimizing negative impacts

Budget: US $500,000 (inclusive of all six country studies)

Deadline: November 26, 2007

Individual applications are not accepted - researchers must be part of a country study team which includes those conducting the household surveys and those that write the country report. Researchers or institutes are not restricted, however, only to one bid. Individuals may apply as many times as they wish, as long as they are always part of a full country study team.

GDN announces the release of the second volume in the GDN Series published by Edward Elgar. ‘Political Institutions and Development: Failed Expectations and Renewed Hopes' challenges the cliché that ‘good institutions’ are essential for sustainable socio-economic development by focusing on the need to adapt potential solutions to local conditions. Edited by Natalia Dinello and Vladimir Popov, this volume explores the relationship between political institutions and development in diverse regions including the Commonwealth of Independent States, East and South Asia, and Latin America.

Register online to attend GDN’s 2008 annual conference

GDN’s Ninth Annual Global Development Conference ‘Security for Development: Confronting Threats to Survival and Safety' will bring together nearly 600 researchers, policymakers and development practitioners from across the world to discuss the role of physical security as a precondition of human development. The conference will focus on pervasive threats, whose potential to cause physical or material damage shortens the planning horizons of individuals, communities and enterprises and challenges their survival. Threats to be addressed include violence (domestic abuse, violent crime, and civil conflict), and major calamities including pandemics and natural disasters (such as earthquakes, drought and floods). The conference will go beyond the recognition and identification of threats by highlighting responses in various parts of the world.

Key speakers include:

  • H.E. Luisa Dias Diogo, Prime Minister of Mozambique, Mozambique
  • Michael Spence, Stanford University, United States
  • Hon. Min Mahinda Samarasinghe, Disaster Management and Human Rights Minister, Sri Lanka
  • Jeffrey Sachs, Columbia University, United States (via videoconference)
  • Paul Collier, Oxford University, United Kingdom
  • Ajay Chhibber, The World Bank, United States
  • Andres Penate, Formerly of the DAS Intelligence Unit, Colombia
  • Bruce Davis, Australian Agency for International Development
  • Paul Salem, Carnegie Middle East Center, Lebanon

Registration is currently open to participants! To attend the conference, visit our conference webpage at http://www.gdnet.org/ninth_conference and pay a registration fee of USD $100 online. GDN is not responsible for accommodation, meals or travel. The registration fee is non-refundable.
