Hollywood Jesus Annual Gathering
Full Schedule Set; Online Registration Opens

The status quo is never "good enough."  Once a year, HJ's staff gathers at Renton, Washington's Harambee Church to revisit HJ's foundational goals, build bonds of fellowship, and hone skills in order to bring the best possible cultural insights to the web.

Better yet, the event is also open to readers and pastors!

On tap for this year's workshops -- December 29 through 31 -- are writer and critic Jeffrey Overstreet, recently honored at the City of Angels Film Festival; Peter Chattaway, film critic for CT Movies and Books and Culture; Mike Gunn, Harambee pastor and co-founder of Seattle's Mars Hill Church; James Harleman, Mars Hill pastor; author, animation scholar and educator Ken Priebe; Hollywood Jesus founder David Bruce; HJ Managing Editors Greg and Jenn Wright; and HJ Channel Editors Melinda Ledman and Maurice Broaddus.

Registration for the full three-day event is $75.  Pastor and student discounts are available, plus single-day tickets.

Full schedule and registration details are available at
Hollywood Jesus.

The Call Came from Billy Graham

At a San Jose rally in September of 2007, the evangelist Billy Graham challenged the pastors present to reclaim the Internet for Christ -- to make it, in our generation, what the Gutenberg Press was in its day: a powerful force for the Gospel.

In response to that call, David Bruce -- then pastoring a congregation in California -- put on his thinking cap.  "A few days later," he says, "I began planning a website to review pop culture from a Christian perspective and use those reviews as a springboard to the gospel. I took a crash course in creating websites, and Hollywood Jesus launched in late 1997."

The domain name was registered on October 29, and HJ's first web pages went up the following January. The site now features a staff of eight editors and over fifty volunteer contributors and has published over a thousand articles in the last six months alone.

What has the journey been like for David?  "
The popularity of Hollywood Jesus been a pleasant surprise. My mailbox gets fuller by the week, and I try to respond to all letters," he says.  "Incidentally, I am still involved with local church -- two, in fact. They are, of course, inter-denominational, non-creedal, and independent, with multi-media presentations every week. These are communities that fully engage the culture. Where else would Mr. Hollywood Jesus go? God is good."
