GOOGLE RALLIES ALLIES IN OPEN LINUX PHONE INITIATIVE
Google and 33 other companies have announced an
ambitious industry alliance that will maintain a completely open source
mobile phone stack. The Open Handset Alliance (OHA) says phones based on
its Linux-based "Android" stack will reach market in as soon as eight
months.

A New York-based startup is readying a modular, open source
hardware/software system resembling a set of electronic Legos. Bug Labs
claims device developers can build "anything" using "Bug," which
comprises an ARM11-powered base and various modular add-ons.

LINUX-BASED PROGRAMMABLE CLOCK DEVICE SHIPS
Chumby is shipping its Linux-powered device designed for the bedside,
desktop, and kitchen counter. The alarm-clock sized "Chumby" has
hackable hardware, software, and outerware, connects via WiFi, and can
be programmed to display everything from clock faces to stock quotes.

DEBIAN POWERS SLEEK, TWO-POUND MINI-PC
German Web retailer Manufactum has introduced a sleek, low power mini-PC
that runs Debian Linux. The 450-Euro Manuscriptum is based on a 500MHz
AMD Geode LX800, is equipped with an 80GB hard drive, and offers 1920 x
1400 graphics.

DIY CPU DEMO'D RUNNING MINIX
Bill Buzbee offered the first public demonstration of the Minix OS -- a
cousin of Linux -- running on his homebrew minicomputer, today at the
Vintage Computer Festival in Mountain View, Calif. Magic-1, built with
74-series TTL ICs using wire-wrap construction, implements a homebrew,
8086-like ISA.

LINUX AT HEART OF BMOC (BIG MULTICAST ON CAMPUS)
Video Furnace has licensed its MPEG-4-based video distribution system to
OSTN, a student-produced video network. Video Furnace System 4 uses
Internet2 or private, multicast-enabled Ethernet networks to deliver
multicast feeds to desktops, regardless of the operating system,
browser, or plug-in.
