Desert Island Reading

Recently, I received an email message from someone setting up a new graphic design department at a university. Her design library budget was limited, so she was looking for must-have book recommendations. While it was a hard question to answer because "must-have" depends on the goals of the program and the students, I told her five that I wouldn't want to be without.

I'll share those names with you next week, but first, it's your turn. What five books would you recommend for a new graphic design program? Post the titles at www.creativepro.com/talkbackedit/feature/26073.html.

Speaking of revealing names, last week's newsletter challenged you to identify nine typefaces based solely on their question marks. It was a difficult test, and only one person correctly named all nine fonts. Congratulations, Pierre Côté!

The question marks and their corresponding typeface names are below from left to right:

Woodland
Bodoni Seventy-two
Vintage
Gill Sans
Scala
Enclave
Jellybaby
Golden Type
Cholla

Get the Inside Scoop on Leopard, the New Mac OS

If you want to know about the new Leopard operating system, you could watch the guided tour on Apple's Web site. Its production values and presentation reflect the company's legendary attention to marketing detail, but do you think you'll hear the full story? In this special three-part installment of the Get Creative videocast, Shellie Hall tells — and shows — it like it really is.

"Install it on a secondary computer. I've lost some very important functionality because some updates aren't there yet."

Why, Illustrator, Why?!

Sometimes you resize an Illustrator text frame and the text reflows, staying the same size. Why are there other times when you enlarge an Illustrator text frame and the text grows, too? Mordy Golding shares the secret of making Illustrator behave correctly.

"The first thing to understand is that Illustrator has two types of text objects: Point Type and Area Type. Point Type is used most often for random text objects that appear in your document and aren't bound by any shape or frame. Area Type is for larger blocks of text, where words flow from one line to the next and are encompassed within a shape or a frame."

Feeling Lazy? Make Photoshop Do It

Hidden within the submenus of Photoshop's File menu are easy ways to automatically output multiple copies of an image in different formats; print one page with multiple versions of an image; and create diptychs and triptychs. Ben Long lets you in on the secrets.

"While Photoshop has exceptional image-editing controls, it can also help you with more mundane work, such as resizing and converting images from one format to another."

How-to: Photoshop Inside InDesign

InDesign experts Anne-Marie Concepcion and Pariah S. Burke walk you through the artistic options in InDesign CS3's new Effects panel. Even if you don't have CS3, check out this article for its special discount on InDesign Magazine!

"You can apply transparency effects to a stroke, a fill, text, or the entire object. You can even mix it up so that a single object's stroke, fill, and/or text have different opacity settings and blend modes applied for each attribute. This fine-tuned control is not just for transparency: Adobe added nine more object effects to InDesign CS3. In this tutorial, you'll learn how to screen back a photo for readability, make a live text mask, and composite with a gradient feather."

A Simple Self-Mailer Spells Success

If you're creating personalized direct-mail pieces, you can benefit from Frank J. Romano's exploration of a classic — and highly effective — brochure from the medium's early days.

"The program was a huge success for Novartis Seeds. The company eliminated a 36-page product catalog with a customized 6-page catalog. Dealers who participated in the custom order affirmation program had a 21.7% increase in sales over the prior year. Dealers who did not participate in the program only had a 0.7% increase in sales over the prior year. There were 27% fewer returns and cancelled orders from the previous year."
