Review Roundup: A Fresh Crop of Flash Players

Every year an updated crop of flash portable media players
hits the market just in time to tempt holiday shoppers. And,
every year, other PMP makers vie to unseat the almighty iPod
as the go-to player. The good news for shoppers out there is
that the stiff competition brings out the best in every player.
We found these seven particularly impressive in our PC Labs
testing.

Review: Maxtor's Master of Disaster (Recovery)

The Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini ($149.99 direct) is a highly
portable notebook-class 160GB USB hard drive that fits inside
a coat pocket. Like other pocket-size drives, it's meant for
shuttling your data between two PCs, such as your work and home
machines, as well as for backing up your data. But how it
differs from its competitors is what makes the OneTouch so
special. See where it shines in the full review.

Top 10: Weirdest Alarm Clocks

We're all pretty good at tuning out our alarm clocks first
thing in the morning: That annoying beeping, buzzing, or
ringing fades into the background of our dreams and it's as
if it never really existed. Problem is, once we've learned to
tune out the alarm, we end up late. These ten alarm clocks
that shock, rock, and fly are sure to get you up and out the
door on time.

nla_internal_2041781.jpg The Spy in Your Server Room

Your business's private information may not be as safe as you
think--especially when you take into account how many people
pass through your office's revolving door on a daily basis.
That's why many companies hire TraceSecurity employees to test
the security of their systems--operations that usually involve
TraceSecurity personnel talking their way into offices in
order to gain access to server rooms and sensitive customer
information. PC Magazine was invited along to cover a recent
TraceSecurity operation.

Column: Ten More Years of Business Travel

Everyone thought that the dawn of videoconferencing would be
the end of traveling across the country for meetings. Well,
we're not there yet. And as Tim Bajirin sees it, it's going to
be a few more years until we can say "good-bye" to business
class. Ten years, to be exact. What's the holdup? Read his
column to find out.

AppScout: Web Group Hits Comcast with FCC Complaint Over P2P
Blocking

Internet advocacy groups are none too pleased with Comcast.
The SavetheInternet.com coalition and several academics last
Thursday filed a complaint with the FCC calling on the commission
to stop Comcast from violating customer rights in the wake of
reports that the ISP is cutting off service to file-sharing
services. Head to AppScout to learn more about the suit and
Comcast's response.

PC Magazine Discussions
Tell us your thoughts on the following topics:

Dvorak: Web-Site Entropy
I don't know about you, but I've encountered more and more
examples of what I call "Web-site entropy." I apply this term
to sites that were once usable and well designed but have since
become either too fancy or have deteriorated into just plain
unusable. Let's look at a few examples. Are there any sites
whose designs bug you?

FTC: Web Ads Still Do Not Respect Privacy
Internet advertisers have fallen short of promised self-
regulation in respecting Internet users' privacy, a Federal
Trade Commission official said last Thursday, even as one firm,
Tacoda, said it decided to refrain from collecting some
sensitive information. Do you agree with the FTC?

Senators Question Telco Domestic Spying Immunity
U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-VT, questioned on Oct. 31 whether
an "after-the-fact free pass" is in order for telecommunications
carriers that cooperated with the Bush administration's domestic
spying program of telephone wiretapping and e-mail surveillance.
What do you think is the best way to handle it?
