TDWI Webinar—Determining the Success of Your BI Initiative
Date: November 14, 2007
Time: 9:00 am PT/12:00 noon ET
Presenter: Dr. James Thomann, Principal Consultant, DecisionPath Consulting
Determining whether BI is making a difference in an organization is very difficult. It is easy to measure what BI costs, but in order to complete an ROI, one has to also measure the value that BI brings to the organization. That is the focus of this presentation. We will begin by exploring the components that constitute success, and close by looking at a process to determine how to measure this success.
There are three major components of success for a BI initiative: business success, political success, and technical success. These measures are not only important in determining one's ROI, but they are also necessary in managing the quality of the initiative and its evolution over time.
Attend this Webinar, and you will learn:
- Why BI should be managed as a program rather than a set of individual projects.
- The factors that make up the three major components of success and why failing on any one of the three can be fatal to a BI initiative.
- How to use the measures associated with these components to not only measure success, but also manage quality and change.
- The GQMM process for determining how to measure success.

TDWI Webinar—Dealing with Spreadmarts: Strategies for Migrating to a Managed BI Environment
Date: January 16, 2008
Time: 9:00 am PT/12:00 noon ET
Presenter: Wayne Eckerson, Director, TDWI Research
One of the most insidious problems in data warehousing is the proliferation of spreadmarts-spreadsheets and Access databases that masquerade as data marts. Created independently, these data shadow systems deliver a fragmented view of the enterprise and an inconsistent view that can cripple the business. This Webinar will show how spreadmarts are a symptom of a larger problem and then outline strategies for migrating organizations to a managed BI environment that delivers a single version of truth.
Attend this Webinar, and you will learn:
- The organizational dynamics that drive spreadmarts
- Trends in spreadmart proliferation and remedies
- How to use spreadmarts to identify business requirements
- The five C's for controlling the proliferation of spreadmarts

Unifying the Practices of Data Profiling, Integration, and Quality (dPIQ)
Data profiling, data integration, and data quality go together like bread, peanut butter, and jam, because all three address related issues in data assessment, acquisition, and improvement. Because they overlap and complement each other, the three are progressively practiced simultaneously, often by the same team within the same data-driven initiative. Hence, there are good reasons and ample precedence for bringing the three related practices together. The result is an integrated practice for data profiling, integration, and quality, succinctly named by the acronym dPIQ (pronounced "DEE pick").
