INFO CAREER TRENDS - November 5, 2007

Hello tayllorcriss@gmail.com,

In this issue:

Also, browse the latest job ads at LISjobs.com and new professional development opportunities at Beyond the Job!

Happy belated Halloween, to those of you who celebrate! Info Career
Trends is winding down the year and celebrating the season with a
few more changes. First, individual articles are now online at the
new Info Career Trends blog at www.lisjobs.com/career_trends/.

This means a new RSS feed: feeds.feedburner.com/InfoCareerTrends, so
please update your subscriptions. But also, and more importantly, it
means YOU now have the ability to comment on articles and add your
own ideas and input. (Nostalgic for the old format? Access or print
this month's newsletter as a single text file at
www.lisjobs.com/newsletter/archives/text/nov07.txt.)

The Library Career People column you know and love is also changing
over to a blog format (www.lisjobs.com/careerqa_blog/) in order to
facilitate communication and to provide more timely answers to
questions. Q&A columns will no longer appear in their entirety in
this newsletter, but will be replaced by highlights from recent blog
posts and conversations. Subscribe to the Library Career People blog
at feeds.feedburner.com/CareerQaWithTheLibraryCareerPeople.

So, what else is new?

Even more bloggy goodness: Beyond the Job, a professional
development blog for librarians, library workers, and info pros of
all types, has MOVED! We now have our own URL: www.beyondthejob.org
and a new RSS feed: feeds.feedburner.com/beyondthejob/HAwA. Please
update your bookmarks and subscriptions, and come visit us there.
Beyond the Job contains articles, calls for papers, job-hunting
advice, scholarship and award announcements, professional
development opportunities, and other news and ideas on ways to
further your library career. Send any announcements you would like
posted on the blog to Sarah Johnson (sarah@libraryjobpostings.org)
or Rachel Singer Gordon (rachel@lisjobs.com).

And, as if that weren't enough excitement, my new book, Information
Tomorrow
, is now available from Information Today! This edited
collection on technology and the future of public and academic
libraries brings together 20 of today’s leading thinkers on the
intersections between libraries and technology. They address various
ways in which new technologies influence librarians’ actions and
goals and offer ideas for using technology to meet patrons where
they are. Find out who they are, read the foreword by Stephen Abram,
and peruse the table of contents at: www.lisjobs.com/infotomorrow/.

I want to hear from you!

Again, if you have any ideas for additional content you want to see
either in the newsletter or on LISjobs.com, speak now; e-mail
rachel@lisjobs.com with comments or suggestions. And, a big shout
out to the six of you who made a donation after last month's call.
For the rest of you, I'm still accepting donations to help support
the newsletter and expand LISjobs.com, including its redesign, new
content, and additional database programming. I can accept donations
either via PayPal,
https://www.paypal.com/xclick/business=rachel%40lisjobs.com or
postal mail (payable to Rachel Gordon, c/o LISjobs.com, PO Box 6931,
Villa Park, IL 60181). If you've used the site to find a great job
or to hire a great employee, or used the newsletter to help you
develop your library career, please consider donating. (And no,
sorry, not tax deductible!)

Want to contribute in a different way? Think about writing for Info
Career Trends
. I'm currently seeking queries for the May 2008 issue,
for which the theme is "Show me the money!" Potential topics for
this issue include: finding and landing personal grants, awards, and
scholarships; getting funding for conferences, workshops, and other
continuing education opportunities; financing an MLS, Ph.D., or LTA
degree; strategies for earning a raise or promotion at work;
negotiating starting salaries.

E-mail queries outlining your proposed article to
editor@lisjobs.com, and see contributor guidelines and details on
upcoming themes at www.lisjobs.com/newsletter/theme.htm .

LJ wants to hear from you, too

And now, for something completely different: a note from Library
Journal
about its annual "Mover and Shakers" issue. I get to write
some of the profiles, and am looking forward to possibly writing
about... some of you!

It's time once again for nominations for Library Journal's Movers
and Shakers issue, www.libraryjournal.com/info/CA606274.html. This
supplement to the March 15, 2008 issue will profile "50-plus up-and-
coming individuals from across the United States and Canada who are
innovative, creative, and making a difference" in the profession. If
you've ever wondered, "Why aren't they profiling more [fill in the
blank: sci-tech librarians, archivists, library consortium staff,
independent information professionals, library marketing staff,
local history librarians, library consultants or vendors, library
program directors, or whatever your own specialization is"], keep in
mind that we can only write about people who get nominated in the
first place! Please get your nominations in by November 15. Thanks!
