It’s Day 3 of AFI FEST and today the DAILY NEWS brings you insights on many of the international films and filmmakers at the Festival, and everything you need to plan your FEST experience.

Asian Cinema

Viewing the Asian films at AFI FEST as a group, you can’t help being struck by the richness of global culture. Even with a film as distinctly Japanese as Mika Ninagawa’s lush period piece SAKURAN, or Sherwood Hu’s Hamlet adaptation, PRINCE OF THE HIMALAYAS, it is easy to see intercultural influences. When asked the difference between audiences across the globe, Hu simply stated, "Sometimes audiences respond to sensation and other times it is the suspension of reality. Worldwide, all audiences respond to good storytelling."

CARAMELMiddle Eastern Cinema

Filmmakers from the Middle East, such as Nadine Labaki (CARAMEL), husband and wife filmmakers Etgar Keret and Shira Gefen (JELLYFISH) and Oded Lotan (THE QUEST FOR THE MISSING PIECE) are succeeding in taking their audience beyond the six o’clock news headlines and into what they say is the real story of their homeland, not only in an effort to have their story heard as a creative outlet, but to dispel stereotypical beliefs so often prevalent among Westerners.

CARAMELLatin Cinema

It’s incredible how this child called Latin Cinema has grown leaps and bounds with AFI FEST and watching him grow has been an eye opener. Although it maintains youthful freshness through his narrative language in each and every one of its movies, each year Latin Cinema surpasses expectations of creativity, characteristic of visionary filmmakers, including Aaron Fernandez of USED PARTS, Alberto Arvelo of CYRANO FERNANDEZ and Sergio Umansky of IT?S BETTER IF GABRIELA DOESN?T DIE.
