Cherryholmes Family Finds Harmony in Bluegrass |

In 1999, in the wake of the tragic death of eldest daughter Shelly, the Cherryholmes family travelled to a nearby bluegrass festival in the hopes of lifting their collective spirits. On the way home, they decided to buy instruments and learn to play. Since then, they've become one of the fastest-rising new acts on the bluegrass scene with five well-received albums and an International Bluegrass Music Association Entertainer of the Year award to their credit. They'll be bringing an evening of fiddling, step dancing, classic country yodeling, close harmony singing, and red-hot picking to the Mondavi Center on November 3. As Bill Monroe himself would've put it: y'all come!

Come Along and Gamelan |
The exotic sights and sounds of Bali will come to the Mondavi Center with a performance by Gamelan Çudamani on November 16. In a presentation entitled Odalan Bali, the 31 virtuoso musicians and dancers of Gamelan Çudamani will bring the Balinese temple ceremony known as odalan to the Jackson Hall stage complete with colorful costumes, exquisite dance, and the extraordinary music of the Balinese gamelan tradition.

Luis Alberto Urrea on
The Devil's Highway |

Acclaimed author Luis Alberto Urrea, whose book The Devil's Highway is the subject of the UC Davis 2007-08 Campus Community Book Project, will speak at the Mondavi Center on November 28. Urrea will discuss The Devil's Highway—a hard-hitting account of the real-life story of a group of illegal immigrants' journey across the Arizona desert—along with immigration-related issues, his career as a writer, and more in the Campus Community Book Project's culminating event.
