JAKE HUMPHREY ON AMERICAN FOOTBALL
This weekend the razzmatazz, glitz, glamour and sheer scale of America's number one sport arrives in the UK and it's time for us all to sit up and take notice.
It's the Miami Dolphins v New York Giants - this is sport on a grand scale. Sport is about to go supersize!
Even Admiral Lord Nelson has been overshadowed by the arrival in Trafalgar Square of a 26ft replica of the Dolphins' star player Jason Taylor, which has been on a nationwide tour to drum up interest in the game that takes place under Wembley's famous arch on Sunday evening.
'But the NFL has visited these football-mad shores before', I hear you cry.
Correct, but this is the first time a regular season game has been played outside North America.
Careers and campaigns are on the line and we should feel honoured.
The wait for a season ticket in the States can stretch to 25 years, games sell out well in advance and the interest in the sport from school to the Super Bowl is just phenomenal.
While America gets to watch David Beckham sat in the stands with a swollen ankle during MLS matches, in return we get a one-off, high-energy, high-impact event that might just be a sign of things to come.
Who knows, if Sunday is successful we may see more cross-pollination of the world's biggest brands and stars.
Is it just a coincidence that Chelsea are the official hosts of the Giants - could we be a few years away from Arsenal v Chelsea in the Home Depot Arena?
What I do know for sure is that everyone inside Wembley is set to be wowed by the spectacle of the NFL.
It may be a super off-form Dolphins team jetting into Heathrow (played seven, lost seven) but it's still the Dolphins, and since legendary quarterback Joe Montana graced my bedroom wall in the late 80s I've been waiting for this moment.
Roll on Sunday,
Jake
Jake Humphrey presents highlights of the match on BBC TWO at 2300 BST on Sunday. (The match is live on Radio 5 Live sports extra from 1645 and on BBC Radio 5 Live from 1900). |
