TONIGHT ON THE CBS EVENING NEWS

Here is an early preview of what we are planning for tonight’s CBS EVENING NEWS from Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric…

Hi everyone,

A pair of explosions rocked the caravan carrying former Pakistan premier Benazir Bhutto through Karachi today. The deadly blasts struck just hours after she first returned to her country after eight years of exile. While Premier Bhutto was not hurt, dozens were killed or injured, according to early reports. Sheila MacVicar will have the latest tonight.

It killed 19,000 and infected an estimated 90,000 Americans in one year. Now reports of drug-resistant staph infections - known as MRSA - are popping up in schools in at least a half-dozen states. How safe are our children? Dr. Jon LaPook will take a closer look.

Kids and cold medicines: is it a dangerous combination? That’s what a Food and Drug Administration panel is debating today, a week after 14 cough and cold products aimed at toddlers and babies were pulled off drug-store shelves. Wyatt Andrews will report.

A Maine middle school is today taking a rare and controversial move: offering birth control to girls as young as 11. The decision to offer a range of contraceptives to middle-schoolers comes after an outbreak of pregnancies among the city’s pre-teens in recent years. Byron Pitts will have details of the plan.

For decades, Christian Conservatives have been one of the country’s strongest Republican voting blocks. But that could be shifting in the lead up to the 2008 election as the younger generation of evangelicals voices its new priorities. I’ll have an in-depth look at this potentially powerful group of voters.

I hope you’ll join us tonight,

Katie

SATURDAY NIGHT ON 48 HOURS

Here's a look at what's coming up on Saturday's 48 Hours Mystery, The Sugar Land Conspiracy:

The Whitakers, a religious Texas family, were known in their community for their warmth and hospitality. But in December 2003, tragedy struck the sweet town of Sugar Land. Returning home from a family dinner, Kent and Tricia Whitaker and their sons Bart and Kevin were gunned down. Each was shot as they entered their home. Tricia and younger son Kevin were shot fatally, while Kent and older son Bart recovered from their wounds. The tragedy shocked Sugar Land. Who would harm this loving family? Police discovered that the attacker had used the Whitaker's own gun. It was clear that this was not a random act of violence: Tricia and Kevin had been assassinated. Peter Van Sant gets to the bottom of the case in this week's chilling 48 Hours Mystery, The Sugar Land Conspiracy.

(48 Hours Mystery airs Saturday at 10pmET/9CT)
