This week on BBC World... Week commencing  12th May 2007

  News This Week
This week on BBC World the spotlight will be on Algeria where BBC correspondent Ian Pannell will be reporting live on the parliamentary elections. President Bouteflika has been ruling by decree since the last parliament reached the end of its mandate in January. The country has suffered years of insurgency since the authorities cancelled a general election in 1992 which an Islamist party seemed set to win. In France, the news team will be live in Paris as Nicolas Sarkozy is sworn in as president, while further south, we'll be bringing viewers all the news, gossip and glamour from the Cannes Film festival.

BBC World's acclaimed health and medical strand Kill Or Cure? continues this week by investigating the disease rubella. Catching rubella usually means nothing more than mild rash and can often pass unnoticed, which makes it difficult to diagnose. However, if it's caught by a woman in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy it can result in the baby being born with congenital rubella syndrome which leads to devastating birth defects such as blindness, deafness and poorly developed internal organs.
