ALIENS INVADE .NET MICRO FRAMEWORK
Windows Embedded software architect Mike Hall recently whipped up a
little .NET Micro Framework application on a flight to Paris. It
emulates the classic Space Invaders game, complete with "bases, aliens,
missiles, and explosions." .NET MF is Microsoft's lowest-end OS,
targeting devices with highly limited resources.

PISTOL-GRIP DATA COLLECTOR RUNS WINDOWS CE
Hand Held Products Inc. has added a new data-collection handheld to its
Dolphin 7000 series. The Windows CE 5.0-based Dolphin 7850 features an
ergonomic design, rugged construction, and power management claimed to
enable it to be used more than ten hours without recharging.

WEBCAST TO HIGHLIGHT WINDOWS MOBILE SECURITY
Microsoft's Windows Mobile team has announced a webcast devoted to
improving and simplifying mobile device security. The 60-minute program
will be presented Tuesday, Oct. 23 and will "cover device protection,
data protection, virtual private networking, security policy
enforcement, remote device management, inventory and reporting tools,
and more."

SUMMIT CHATS UP SMARTPHONES
An annual conference devoted to smartphones of every type, including
Windows Mobile devices, is set for Oct. 22 in San Francisco. The

POWER TOYS RELEASED FOR .NET COMPACT FRAMEWORK 3.5 CTP

500 MILLION TOUCH-PHONES TO SHIP BY 2012
More than 100 million handsets with touch screens will be shipped in
2008, and more than 500 million will ship by 2012, according to a new
study by ABI Research. Citing recent product introductions, the research
firm says intuitive user interfaces are now becoming a critical
ingredient in smartphones.

NEW INTEL SYSTEM-ON-CHIP TO SLASH UMPC IDLE POWER
Intel has made major promises concerning future ultra-mobile PC (UMPC),
mobile internet device (MID), and notebook computer technologies. A new
UMPC SoC (system-on-chip) will slash idle power consumption to 1/100th
of the original, while next year's version of Centrino Duo technology
will integrate WiMAX into notebooks.
