OPINION: MOBILE LINUX IS NOT ABOUT FREE SOFTWARE
This guest column posits six causes for Linux's meteoric rise in
popularity among handset manufacturers. Author Andreas Constantinou,
founder of a market research firm, discounts widely accepted truisms
like customizability and developer preference for source code access,

FIRST U.S. GPL LAWSUIT FILED

LINUX GADGET LETS CAMERA-PHONES UPLOAD TO THE WEB
Italy-based KDev has used Linux to build a cellphone-to-web gateway
device aimed at letting users easily and instantly upload camera-phone
photos to the web. The FoxBox MMS integrates a GSM/GPRS cellular modem
card, and accepts photos sent via multimedia messaging service (MMS).

MONTAVISTA READIES NEW LINUX MOBILE PHONE OS
MontaVista will ship a "fifth-generation" Linux-based operating system
for mobile phones in mid-November. The company says Mobilinux 5.0 will
offer new security, power, networking, and quick-boot capabilities,
along with footprint reductions, real-time improvements, and lower build
costs for vendors of handsets and other mobile consumer devices.

EMBEDDED LINUX'S GROWTH SLOWS, STUDY FINDS
The market for embedded Linux software, tools, and services grew
significantly during 2006, surpassing the $100 million mark, reports
Venture Development Corp. (VDC). However, growth has slowed since 2005,
when the embedded Linux market reportedly grew a whopping 30 and 40
percent.

INCH-SQUARE DSP MODULE RUNS LINUX
Cambridge Signal Processing (Camsig) is shipping a 1-inch-square
"system-on-module" powered by an Analog Devices (ADI) Blackfin DSP
(digital signal processor). The Minotaur BF537 and its simple two-layer
break out board support uClinux, and target network cameras, network
audio players, DVRs, PDAs, industrial automation, and robotics
applications.

POWER.ORG SPINS DUAL-CORE PPC LINUX DEV KIT
Power.org has announced a new Linux development kit and reference
implementation for a dual-processor PowerPC chip. The announcement was
made at the first-ever Power.org Developer's Conference in Austin,
Texas, where planned updates to several PowerPC standards were
announced, along with a new online directory of embedded-oriented
PowerPC products and services.

NEW INTEL SYSTEM-ON-CHIP TO SLASH UMPC IDLE POWER
Intel has made major promises concerning future ultra-mobile PC (UMPC),
mobile internet device (MID), and notebook computer technologies. A new
UMPC system-on-chip will slash idle power consumption to 1/100th of the
original, while next year's version of Centrino Duo technology will
integrate WiMAX into notebooks.

500 MILLION TOUCH-PHONES TO SHIP BY 2012
More than 100 million handsets with touch screens will be shipped in
2008, and more than 500 million will ship by 2012, according to a new
study by ABI Research. Citing recent product introductions, the research
firm says intuitive user interfaces are now becoming a critical
ingredient in smartphones.

SUMMIT CHATS UP SMARTPHONES
An annual conference devoted to smartphones of every type, including

Long-time kernel hacker Robert Love has authored a technical book on
