A NOTE FROM BERT:
As you can tell, I've changed the format of the
email version of the Sports Shooter Newsletter.
Instead of including entire stories in a monthly
email, I have printed just the headline and lede
paragraph of each of the newsletter's articles
and a direct link to its place on the
SportsShooter.com website, where it archived.

I have published this newsletter for almost 10
years and in that time, there have been many ups
and downs ...usually determined by my state of
mind at the moment ... and I will admit that I
have come close to ending it on a couple of
occasions. But I am still around, producing
interesting, educational, inspirational and cool
content, usually late at night when Emma and
Deanna are asleep and won't complain about my
choice of music coming from iTunes.

Take a look and if you like the old method ---
all of the stories printed in their entirety ---
let me know. At the moment, I am considering this
an experiment. I appreciate all of your support
and kind words about the content in the
newsletter. You can email me at:
bert@sportsshooter.com.

Thanks to Mr. Brad Mangin for his help, support
and friendship through the years. As I write in
my column, Sports Shooter would not have been a
reality without my employer USA TODAY and my
bosses there. But also, there would not be a
Sports Shooter Newsletter or SportsShooter.com
without Brad.

A shameless plug:
There are a few spaces left in the upcoming
Sports Shooter Academy Multimedia Boot Camp, Nov.
2-3 in Orange County, CA. For more info and a

Leading Off: Thanks for the Memories
By Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter
The King Of the Beach is hanging up his pink cap.
The aches and pains of countless digs, face-first
dives and sprints across the sand have taken
their toll on his 47-year-old body.

I Shut Down The Little Rock Airport
By Eileen Blass, USA TODAY
Airline travel is a pain these days. I have been
a staff photographer with USA TODAY for the last
18 years and I fly frequently. I've had my share
of airport delays. Haven't we all? Lost luggage,
long security lines, canceled flights, the works.
Since 9/11, the two words I have heard most are
"bag check". My travels on Friday August 24, 2007
gave the words "bag check" a whole new meaning.

Intern Diaries: Associated Press
'My internship threw me into the chaos and frenzy
of covering news, news and more news. I loved
every second of it.'
By Marcus Yam, Associated Press
(Editor's note: At the end of each summer, it has
been a tradition at the Sports Shooter Newsletter
to have several students share their experiences
working at an internship.)

6 a.m. Buzz. I wake up to the mechanical hymn of
my little alarm clock. I jump out into my bed
wobbling onto my side. Apparently still
recovering from jet lag. I clean up, and head
into town. The sun is rising. I watch the
building silhouettes sweep past in a rhythm as I
gaze out of the car window. I can't help but
cringe and feel nervous about the new challenges
and the hole that I was about to dig deeper. I
thought to myself, "It's been a crazy year,
what's another chicken salad to the mix?" I look
down into the bag and I realize that I forgot to
bring my camera. Great, I thought to myself.

Intern Diaries: The Albuquerque Journal
'Despite living here for 18 years I learned more
in my 6 months at the Journal about this city
than I did for living here for years, and I think
that's pretty cool.'
By Sam Adams, The Albuquerque Journal
(Editor's note: At the end of each summer, it has
been a tradition at the Sports Shooter Newsletter
to have several students share their experiences
working at an internship.)

Hey, so coming home isn't such a bad thing. With
one internship down, and looking for another one,
I never expected to land myself back at my
hometown paper. I always looked at internships as
a chance to go some place special, some place
new, so coming home wasn't exactly on the top of
my list.

'I was terrified. Plain and simple. I wanted to
do well. I was worried I couldn't cut it.'
By Pouya Dianat, The Washington Post

Chicken salad from chicken shit. I must have
heard those words at least a couple hundred times
this summer during my internship at The
Washington Post, and I'm glad I did. I had the
benefit of working with a staff that made those
words come true every day.

'Unlike a newspaper photography internship, the
majority of my time was spent in the office,
working on featuresŠ'

If you've passed through Times Square as a
tourist, you've probably been approached several
times over the course of a few blocks. "Hey - do
you like comedy?" I've had people try to sell me
show tickets, preach religion, even offer a
sample of the latest toothpaste. It's easy to
pick out the tourists - they're dressed somewhat
casually, and usually have a point and shoot
camera in hand or around their neck. I spent the
summer living in New York, but I fit this
demographic a handful of times. "No - I haaaaate
comedy!"

Recording History
Paul Morse went from the Los Angeles Times to the
White House as a staff photographer.
By Paul Morse
Photography has always taken me amazing places
and my journey to the White House started while I
was walking along the beach in Santa Monica, CA
looking for weather features in January 2001. I
answered a phone call from my college buddy Eric
Draper who was asking if I could help him out.
After covering the 2000 Presidential campaign for
the Associated Press he was named the President's
personal photographer and needed to hire a staff
of photographers to cover the White House. I was
his first call.

I've been asked many times what's up with the BIG

my cart. The Big Kahuna told me about a really
sweet cart he had found.

Photographer's Toy Box: Review of the AquaTech New DV-4 Housing
By Donald Miralle, Getty Images
When Canon released the Mark III to mixed reviews
this year, my biggest concern was that I had to
go out and get a new housing for my new cameras.
Being that the button configuration, wheel, and
even some of the dimensions were different, I
knew I had to start from scratch. Luckily, when I
discovered that AquaTech released their new DV-4
housing to accommodate the new Canon cameras, I
had to look no further.

Penn Camera Equipment Notes
By Max Zweig
Who would think that Michigan and Notre Dame
would start the season 0 - 2? Certainly not Nikon
and Canon who are 2 for 2 with the introduction
of their new cameras. I do not want to predict
availability but you know that Penn Camera does
its best to get SportsShooter.com members a bit
of priority. E-mail you needs to:
