In revisiting the discussion of using thumbnail sketches I'm reminded of a similiar sort of sketching I've been doing a lot of lately. In my never-ending remodeling project I do lots and lots of sketches. First it's in my head. Then it's doodles on paper. Then I do some measurements -- and invariably find that I've got a lot less room to work with than I'd imagined. But all this preliminary sketching (virtual and on paper) has revealed all sorts of possibilities (and a few obstacles) that might have otherwise gone unconsidered.

Are You a Pencil Pusher or a Computer Creative?
Recently the subject of doing thumbnail sketches was revived over at Creative Bits. Designers weighed on on the question "Do you create sketches before your design?" If you've already made up your mind, you might not find anything new or exciting in the discussion but for those new to desktop publishing or without any formal graphic design education, it's a topic worth revisiting.

Top Picks - Web Editors  from your Web Design/HTML Guide
Everyone loves a freebie when it gets the job done as well (or better) than something that costs much more. For those on a tight budget or who simply don't want to invest in tools with more bells and whistles than any one person can or should use, consider these free Web editors. Web Design/HTML Guide Jennifer Krynin evaluated over 50 free editors for Windows, Mac, and Linux. See who came out on top:

1) Best Free Editors for Windows
HTML-Kit, KompoZer, Nvu, Amaya, Selida, Coffee Cup, SeaMonkey (where do they get those names) are the leaders of this pack.

2) Best Free Editors for Macintosh
Some of the same editors for Windows have impressive Mac relations too, but the overall list is a lot shorter.

3) Best Free Editors for Linux/UNIX
Again, several of the same names from the Windows and Mac lists top the Linux list. See if your favorite made the cut.
