Text this event

Who needs Austin City Limits with all its imported talent, inflated ticket prices, and exposure to the unforgiving Texas elements? You can have just as much fun at a fraction of the cost with the latest edition of Local Music Is Sexy, which has everything that ACL has, but on a more intimate scale and minus the headaches. Want a goofy-monikered, hipster-buzz phenomenon like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah? Check out the synth-triggered melodies of New York?s (did we say local?) Say Hi To Your Mom. Want to see slick new-wave beast The Killers? Leave Brandon Flowers to his mascara and Springsteen albums and check out Austin?s The Lemurs instead. And why suffer the crowds for The Arcade Fire or LCD Soundsystem when you?ve got The Corto Maltese and Magic Surprise, and DJ sets from Car Stereo (Wars), Ceeplus Bad Knives, Ocelot, and Markus With A K? What are you, some kind of masochist?

Tues Sept 18th, 10pm, $10/$12, all ages   TICKET GIVEAWAY: The Brunettes @ Emo's

brunettes

Text this event

Jonathan Bree and Heather Mansfield have been making music as The Brunettes for nearly a decade, but they?ve only recently started to pick up steam here in the States. Blame the relative obscurity on them being New Zealanders (if you?re having trouble locating the country on a map, perhaps Miss Teen South Carolina can help), and credit a show opening for The Postal Service in London a few years ago for grabbing the attention of Sub Pop head honcho Jonathan Poneman. The Seattle label just issued The Brunettes? twee-rific Structure & Cosmetics, which sports an indie-pop sound that brings to mind bands like Camera Obscura, The Shins, and on the dreamy ?Her Hairagami Set,? The American Analog Set. Opening: Ferraby Lionheart.

To win tickets to this event, email austinpromo@theonion.com with 'Brunettes' in your subject line.

dark meat

Text this event

Though Georgia indie-rock band Dark Meat includes more than 20 collaborators (including former members of Neutral Milk Hotel and Olivia Tremor Control), its music swells and swarms like a single-minded mob. Imagine The Rolling Stones pumped through Phil Spector?s Wall Of Sound: The band piles on rock orchestration with gushes of clamorous percussion, chanting bands of vocalists, swirls of symphonic backing, and sprinkles of bizarre instrumentation. Last year?s Universal Indians alternates between soaring throwback breakdowns and absolute, unrestrained muddle that impresses with unforgiving energy. One of Austin?s many next big things, Black Before Red has the smooth-rock airs of Phoenix, yet escapes the elevator with bells, whistles, handclaps, and a seductive joie de vivre. Opener Ringo Deathstarr plies stuttering feedback and breathy shoegaze vocals into the best approximation of The Jesus And Mary Chain heard since the Reid brothers still liked each other. Also playing: The Red Hearts.

Wed Sept 12th, 9:45pm, $8, 18+   Monty Python And The Holy Grail Quote-Along @ Alamo Drafthouse Village

Text this event

Frequently regarded as one of the funniest movies of all time, 1975?s Monty Python And The Holy Grail uses a send-up of the King Arthur legend to lampoon government, aristocracy, religion, and much more. The manic troupe created a coherent (and highly quotable) comedy out of sketches that turned dismemberment (?It?s just a flesh wound?) and the bubonic plague (?I?m not dead yet?) into fertile material. And it?s relevant to the times?just take in a prayer levied for a Holy Hand Grenade: ?Oh Lord, bless this hand grenade, that with it thou mayest blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy.? It also spawned legions of dorks who can?and will?recite the film from memory at the slightest provocation, most of whom will be on hand here at the Alamo?s Quote-Along, loudly reveling in shrubberies and elderberries without fear of being repressed.

Text this event

Its bricks and mortar may be gone, but the spirit of impossibly hip boutique FactoryPeople lives on in this ACL after-party featuring DJ sets from LCD Soundsystem?s James Murphy, Belgian superstars 2 Many DJs (also known as Soulwax), Johnny ?Guns? Love of L.A.?s celebrated remixers Guns ?N? Bombs, and local DJ Black Madonna. Adding to the late-night-LES vibe, Denton?s Ghosthustler lobs Pitchfork-approved skuzz-bombs like ?Parking Lot Nights? on the outside stage, with Austin?s favorite dance-rock glee club Clap!Clap! and electro-femme duo Lady Pterodactyl plugging in first. And because you?ve all been good little scenesters, this party stretches until 4 a.m. (a FactoryPeople tradition), so be sure to stock up on ?supplies.?

Text this event

History will be kind to Bill Clinton, and?thanks to George W. Bush?the present has been even kinder, with many Americans now fondly recalling Clinton?s time in office as a golden era. The man certainly commanded more respect as commander in chief?a wayward libido, after all, is positively adorable when compared to dangerous incompetence and delusions of grandeur?mostly thanks to what seems to be his genuine compassion for and interest in his fellow man. Through the Clinton Foundation, our former leader has helped fight everything from pediatric AIDS to childhood obesity, and in his new book Giving: How Each Of Us Can Change The World, Clinton examines the impact of this kind of charitable work while encouraging a renewed interest in citizen activism. At this special BookPeople appearance, Clinton will sign copies of Giving and listen to your pleas to retake the White House, by force if necessary.

Text this event

Butch Walker has played various styles of rock in his many incarnations, from metal to power-pop to alt-rock, but experienced only limited success with each. That changed when he began producing and writing songs for people like Avril Lavigne and Simple Plan. He?s since parlayed that success into Butch Walker And The Let?s-Go-Out-Tonites, a glammy rock band that doesn?t take itself too seriously on last year?s The Rise And Fall Of Butch Walker And The Let?s-Go-Out-Tonites. Tongue-in-cheek songs like ?Hot Girls In Good Moods,? ?Too Famous To Get Fully Dressed,? and ?Song Without A Chorus? have plenty of cock-rock swagger?similar to Austin?s own Those Peabodys, a power trio whose Thin Lizzy-derived sound is all meat and gristle. For those who prefer their tunes served up with a dash of ?80s new wave and Anglophilia, members of Bloc Party and Voxtrot take turns DJing the inside.

Sun Sept 16th, 9pm, $30, all ages   Common @ La Zona Rosa

common

Text this event

For much of Common?s career, superstardom has stayed frustratingly just out of reach. The gifted rapper has a long, impressive discography stretching back to the early ?90s, though the world really didn?t notice him until 2000?s Like Water For Chocolate. Even then, Common stayed mostly under the mainstream radar, often relegated to the backpack scene. Although it must have irked him a bit to see his friend, collaborator, and fellow Chicagoan Kanye West hit one out of the park with his 2004 debut, West?s superstardom has proven that a rising tide raises all boats: Common?s new West-produced album, Finding Forever, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart. Though it resembles 2005?s excellent Be?also produced by West?too much, having more of a good thing is never bad. And with his increasing presence on the silver screen?he has a supporting role in the upcoming American Gangster?superstardom may finally be in Common?s grasp. Opening: The Knux.
