Wine House Cocktail Party, November 2006

Dear Criss,

World leaders are gathering for APEC, but what does APEC mean for Wine House you ask? Well the A stands for affordable, like our weekend tasting, the P represents Penfolds, because of the back vintages available, the E is for eating, understandably at our Brasserie, and the C is for competition, for the $30 voucher in our wine trivia (please note: Wine House's explanation of APEC is possibly incorrect).

We hope you enjoy,

From the team at Wine House

Wine of the week

Kay Brothers Block 6 Shiraz 1995

McLaren Vale, South Australia

Robert Parker 96 points!

Jeremy Oliver 93 points!

The planting of Block 6 commenced on the 18th of July 1892 and when finished 5,890 Shiraz vines were in the fertile soil at the Kay's Amery vineyard. Of the original twelve acres only four remain today but the low yield and high care of these vines is world famous as this small block of vines produces one of Australia's best wines. Obviously the supply of Block 6 is limited and this makes it a keenly sort after wine.

Wine House is proud to have some well cellared bottles available with the 1995 the best option for any Block 6 wine lover who is contemplating drinking the famous drop today, or in the next five years.

"This sensational wine is on a faster evolutionary track than the 1996. However, it is nearly the same weight and richness, and certainly also powerful (14.9% alcohol). The wine is black/purple, has a nose of anise, roast beef, creosote, leather, creme de cassis, and blackberries. Very youthful but super-concentrated, full-bodied, and long." - Robert Parker.

"Rich, plump and chunky shiraz with musky, earthy scents of violets and cassis. It's powerfully structured palate is based on concentrated dark, amarone-like plum and prune-like fruit matched with ground coffee/mocha and chocolate oak, finishing long and firm." - Jeremy Oliver.

Please note our stocks of the 2005 Kay Brother Block 6 is not currently available as it will be cellared for release in the future.

$90.00 per bottle (limit two per customer)

Other vintages of Block 6 available from Wine House are the 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003.

Aged Penfolds

Penfolds is one of Australia's premium red wine producers and it is plausible that the APEC meeting has been convened in Australia just to take advantage of this popular drop. Wine House is cellaring many of Australia's best wineries with Penfolds taking up a large position in the store room and the wines featured are just some that are ready for drinking.

Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz 1998
Jeremy Oliver 95 points!

"...highlights of 1998 Penfolds...this is a classy modern wine of polish and elegance despite its almost opulent expression of bright, minty Barossa-based fruit and its juicy, ripe flavours of red and black cherries, cassis and plum. Its chocolate/cedar oak is perfectly balanced, with sophisticated tight, fine tannins." - Jeremy Oliver.
$35.00 per bottle Click here for more vintages of Bin 28

Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz 1986

Jeremy Oliver 93 points!

"Medium red. Intense blackberry/cedar aromas with some mocha nuances. The palate is well-concentrated with blackberry/cedar/mocha flavours and persistent but balanced tannins. Outstanding vintage." - The Rewards of Patience, Fifth Edition.
$45.00 per bottle Click here for more vintages of Bin 128

Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet/Shiraz 1998
Jeremy Oliver 96 points!

"An excellent 389 with length, concentration and polish, especially with respect to the almost sour-edged blueberry notes of its spicy plum/cassis fruit, its integration of smoky, chocolatey American oak and fine, but drying astringency." - Jeremy Oliver.

$72.00 per bottle Click here for more vintages of Bin 389

Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 1994

Jeremy Oliver 94 points!

"Medium deep red. A tightly knit very tannic wine with earthy/ cedarwood/ blackcurrent/ herb aromas and flavours. Lovely fruit but tannins are very muscular. Will hold."

- The Rewards of Patience, Fifth Edition.
$50.00 per bottle Click here for more vintages of Bin 407

Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 1993
Robert Parker 94 points! Wine Spectator 93 points!

"This opaque purple-colored wine exhibits a huge, jammy, blackcurrant, vanilla, licorice, and earthy-scented nose, as well as massive concentration of fruit, glycerin, and body. Readers will find plenty of sweet tannin in the awesomely-endowed finish. This blockbuster, monster-sized Cabernet Sauvignon is accessible because of its low acidity and ripe tannin." - Robert Parker.

$180.00 per bottle Click here for more vintages of Bin 707

Penfolds Bin 98A Chardonnay 1998

Jeremy Oliver 92 points!

"Medium straw gold. Fresh elegant wine with high-pitched grapefruit/fig aromas and toasted nut complexity. A soft creamy palate with stone fruit/grilled nut flavours, plenty of mid-palate richness, finishing crisp and long." - The Rewards of Patience, Fifth Edition.
$70.00 per bottle Click here for more vintages of Bin A

Penfolds St.Henri Shiraz 1999
Jeremy Oliver 95 points! Wine Spectator 92 points!

"...supple and seamless, holding back on its beautiful, ripe blackberry, cherry, leather and pepper flavours until they come through almost as a second wave, swamping the finish and begging for another sip. A different flavour seems to emerge first with each sip...the fruit character is intoxicating in a wine of such refinement." - Wine Spectator.

$80.00 per bottle Click here for more vintages of St.Henri

Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz 1991

Jeremy Oliver 95 points!

"Medium deep red. A stark contrast to 1990. Meaty/ chocolate/ blackberry/ plum aromas with some liquorice/ leather notes. A rich mellow wine with plum/ leather/ cigar box flavours and fine savoury tannins."  - The Rewards of Patience, Fifth Edition.
$90.00 per bottle Click here for more vintages of Magill

Penfolds RWT Shiraz 1999

Jeremy Oliver 96 points! Wine Spectator 94 points!

"Lithe and appealing for its range of flavours, this fascinating wine has dark plum and berry at the core and mint, leather, peach-fuzz and exotic spice notes sneaking in around the edges. Texture is firm but not overly so. It all adds up to an aristocratic red, as the flavours sail on and on." - Wine Spectator.
$150.00 per bottle Click here for more vintages of RWT

Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay 1999
Jeremy Oliver 95 points! Wine Spectator 93 points!

"Toasty, waxy, honeyed aromas of figs, cumquat and butterscotch, with underlying bright honeydew melon and citrus fruits and a hint of lime. High-toned acids and a long, chalky palate deliver a steely mouthfeel of lemon-lime fruit and spicy, toasty oak, finishing tight and savoury." - Jeremy Oliver.

$100 per bottle Click here for more vintages of Yattarna

Penfolds Grange Shiraz 1997
Jeremy Oliver 95 points! Robert parker 94 points!

"The saturated purple-colored 1997 offers a gorgeously sweet nose of blackberry liqueur, cherries, camphor, chocolate, plums, and mocha. The wine is opulently-textured, extremely soft, layered, and seductive. This is a superb Grange that can hold its own against the more heralded 1996." - Robert Parker.
$380.00 per bottle Click here for more vintages of Grange

Penfolds Block 42 Kalimna Cabernet Sauvignon 1996

Jeremy Oliver 95 points!

"Deep red-purple. Intense blackcurrent/dark plum/dark chocolate aromas with some nutty oak. A richly concentrated wine with deep-set cassis/dark plum/chocolate/vanilla fruit ripe cedary tannins and plenty of flavour length."

- The Rewards of Patience, Fifth Edition.

"Simply awesome for its depth of concentrated cassis fruit and barely hidden depth of tannin. Its ripe, heady dark fruit is given equally assertive smoky vanilla and cedary oak, fashioned on a keel of big, balanced, ripe extract." - Jeremy Oliver. $600.00 per bottle

Wine Trivia

Last week's and this week's question is...

What does Olivier Messiaen and Burgundy producer Bouchard Pere & Fils have in common?

We did not receive any answers to this question, perhaps people are thinking too hard? A short look at the production of Bouchard wines and Olivier Messiaen composition's paintings should uncover a correlation.

For your chance to win a $30 Lunch Special at the Brasserie, or a $30 voucher at Old & Rare Wines, email your correct answer to sales@winehouse.com.au! Extra consideration is given to detailed answers where many correct replies are received in a short time period.

PREVIOUS  WINE OF THE WEEK

The Primo Estate "Joseph" sparkling shiraz is one of the best in Australia.
Joseph and Dina Grilli, winemakers at Primo Estate, hold back some of their best shiraz each year for the sparkling blend that incorporates wine taken from 1989 barrels and some 1970's liqueur is used for the dosage. It is rare that such long term dedication to a wine is found and the results can be seen in the glowing reviews.

$44.96 dozen | $49.95 bottle

THIS WEEKS HOT SPECIAL!

More Block 6 on offer this week as we have the 2001 vintage, receiver of 98 points from Robert Parker and 90 from Jeremy Oliver, at a massive discount. Reviewed as "...

RRP $100, Now $85.00 per bottle

A-LEAGUE ROUND 2

Nik Mrdja showed he means business with a brace of goals as the Central Coast Mariners opened with three goals in the first half against Phoenix, who were given a reality check after their amazing comeback last week against Melbourne. So after two rounds the Mariners are four points in front of five teams, with Sydney FC and Wellington bringing up the rear.

MUSIC & WINE

Australian one man band Xavier Rudd has made quite a sensation in the music industry since exploding on the scene a few years ago with his 2004 hit "Let Me Be". But the Rudd has been performing for a lot longer than three years, touring Canada some eight years ago and recording his first album in the process. For such an active man his tunes is very relaxed and good Margaret River cabernet/merlot type music, body and heart but not too much explosion. For more on Xavier Rudd visit...
