Technique Tips

Hopping Plie Lunges

Stay on the balls of the feet as you transition from one side to the other with a hopping motion and land in plie position. Keep the torso vertical and resist the momentum that pulls you forward. Maximize this movement by using your arms. Think of extending the arms down and pushing through the heel of your hands. As you transition to the center, use your muscles to pull the arms back in before extending down on the other side.

Overhead Press with Knee Lift

Begin with the right arm overhead.  Pull the arm down and simultaneously pull the left knee up.  When these two movements are performed together, make sure to engage your abdominals to assist the knee lift movement.  It's important that you engage your "core" muscles for stability.  When lowering the arm down, think "resistance" and do so as if pulling a weight down.

No Place Like Om

It's the end of a stressful, busy day. How do you cope? Do you call a friend? Zone out in front of the television? Reach for a pint of Ben & Jerry's ice cream? Participants in a recent University of Massachusetts Medical School study tried a new coping strategy - meditation - to mentally manage their stress. During a period of eight weeks, researchers recorded the brain waves of these stressed-out employees, as they began to practice meditation. The results? More >

Did You Know?

Get Back on Track

Fall is here and to most people that means getting back to the usual routine. The kids are in school, days are getting shorter, and it's time to get back on the wagon - the workout wagon that is! This is the time to work off all those summer BBQ calories before the holiday season hits.

Jazzercise offers useful tools to help keep you on track. Visit jazzercise.com, click "Learn the Moves" and download the Weekly and Monthly Fitness Logs. In class, track your workout level with the Perceived Exertion Chart or a Polar Heart Rate Monitor. A heart rate monitor will help you determine the right intensity level you should be working at and track your calories burned. At the end of your workout, record your heart rate monitor readings in the Weekly Fitness Log. This will help you keep an eye on your progress and make it easier for you to reach your fitness goals. Ask your instructor how you can purchase a Polar Heart Rate Monitor, and get back on the workout wagon now!

Caffeinate Your Workout?

Source: MSNBC.com

Contrary to the long-held belief that caffeine should be nixed before a workout, research now indicates it can be a good thing. Results from a study conducted at the University of Connecticut in Storrs concluded that moderate caffeine consumption does not adversely affect exercise. In fact, in may actually help people exercise longer. It's not completely clear why this is so, but it is believed that the same boost people get from caffeine to start their day may help counter fatigue and help exercisers go longer. Another theory is that caffeine helps metabolize fat into fuel for longer workouts. This being said, researchers still advise exercisers to stay properly hydrated when exercising and to replace fluids lost from working out.
