SUE BARKER ON THE WORLD ATHLETICS
Before the World Athletics Championships started I thought, from a British perspective, that we might be in for a disappointing time in Osaka.

My fears were increased when UK Athletics set the target of three medals and 14 finalists - that made me think, 'uh-oh we aren't going to get that far here.'

But it has been a really positive start, there have been season's bests, personal bests and even a gold medal from the British team.

Christine Ohuruogu's win in the 400m has caused a huge debate due to the fact that she is returning from a one-year ban for missing drugs tests.

But putting the controversy aside, there are so many positives that the team can take away from Japan and they should be very proud of what they have achieved.

Of course there is the prospect of further medals to come as the championships reach a climax.

I don't think Mo Farrah can squeeze into the medal positions in the 5,000m final, but who knows? We could also have some success in the relay finals.

Sprinting sensation Tyson Gay will be going for his third gold medal on Sunday in the 4x100m after his success in the 100m and 200m.

However, America for once won't go into that as favourites as Jamaica look particularly strong.

The only downside to the championships has been the lack of crowds at the Nagai Stadium.

Even for the 100m final there were empty seats which is remarkable - normally you can't even buy a ticket off a tout for a night like that.

But that shouldn't detract from some of the terrific performances we have witnessed. There have been some real markers put down for the Olympics next year in Beijing.

Enjoy the finale,

Sue
