Welcome Back, Swotter

The sign outside my local high school reads, "Welcome back, students!!!" The sign's typographic enthusiasm is countered by the bored expressions of the teenagers who slouch past it. They don't think it's cool to be excited by learning, but you and I know better. It's invaluable when you need to brush up on work-related skills or simply want to rediscover the creative spark that made you choose this career path in the first place.

While conferences and college classes are still strong options, the Internet has increased our choices by many orders of magnitude. First, of course, there are Web sites like creativepro.com, where each article is a little nugget of information you can put to use. Then there are free and for-pay webinars (seminars on the Web), plus online training sites where you can pay for just one class or have full access to all classes for a limited time. And don't overlook podcasts and vodcasts (video podcasts), almost always free.

For links to these types of education alternatives, see the Learning Resources page at http://www.creativepro.com/story/feature/25843.html.

Part 2 of That '70s Type!

Gene Gable wraps up his typographic tour of the 1970s, when gas was in short supply but far-out display type was all around us.

Now that's groovy.

No Need for Glass When There's Photoshop

When a scene you want to shoot includes a strong contrast between light and dark, it can be hard to properly expose the shot. A graduated neutral density filter (GND) helps by darkening the bright part of the scene and leaving the rest alone. If you don't have a GND, don't worry — Photoshop can do the job just fine. Mark S. Johnson shows you how.

"With both the darker and lighter exposures visible, choose the Move tool, press the Shift key, and drag the darker image on top of the lighter image. Let go. The Shift key ensures perfect registration between the two images."

Illustrator Type Tricks

Why are there plenty of how-to's for playing with type in Photoshop, but few for doing the same in Illustrator? Even if you rarely open that app, James Felici's tutorial will have you creating special-effects text in seconds. And unlike Photoshop output, that text will have all the scaling and resolution benefits of vectors.

"Rusty iron lettering doesn't just erode, it also bulges in places as the oxidized bits expand before disintegrating. The effect outlined below creates type that looks like it's been dredged up out of a very soggy place."

Photoshop Tip Videos

Enjoy three short videos with Michael Ninness' tips on the fastest, easiest ways to straighten images; crop and straighten several photos simultaneously; and even correct perspective with the Crop tool.

"Just throw all of the photos on your scanner and go to File > Automate > Crop and Straighten. You'll end up with three images, all removed from the original, that have been cropped and straightened."

Review: HP Photosmart Pro B9180 Printer

Ben Long has put this printer through exhaustive tests, uncovering its every flaw. His conclusion? This is one fine product.

"The HP B9180 uses HP's new Vivera inkset, a pigment ink system that offers excellent archivability on many different types of paper. The printer's image quality is exceptional, with an extremely bright, wide color gamut and very dark blacks. Its ability to reproduce fine detail is superb on both matte and glossy papers, and it's tough to spot printer dots or dithering patterns on any kind of media."
