Smartphones have lost their status. Not too long ago, a smartphone in your hand meant that you were an important person--a professional not to be trifled with. Now, a smartphone means, well, it means that you have a smartphone. I spend a lot of time on a college campus, and believe me, a smartphone simply isn't a status symbol anymore. The good news in this is that more and more, people have access to superb communications applications. The bad news is that you really need to find another way to show your status. For enterprise users, custom applications that take full advantage of wireless communications and the device interface are great status symbols. For users from businesses large and small, systems and practices that provide genuine security for portable data are high-status indeed. And for everyone else with a smartphone, knowing how and when to use it in ways that are courteous to the other humans around you is, perhaps, the most high-status thing you can do. It's obvious that simply using a smartphone is no longer new and novel. The key, from here on out, is using it well. -Curtis

What’s New

1. Clearwire's WiMAX up close

Comment | Forward to a friend

WiMAX plans are popping up all over, and Clearwire has become the latest to go public with details of its broadband-over-WiMAX offering. With a flat monthly fee for high-speed access anywhere within a metropolitan area, the Clearwire plan joins those of other vendors (like Clearwire partner Sprint), as the next wave of Internet access begins.

- read about the service details at CIO-Today

2. Mobile users not security savants

Comment | Forward to a friend

Ready to be surprised? A recent InsightExpress study says that many wireless networking users don't know the first thing about wireless security, and don't follow good security practices even if they know what they are. Security experts and network managers alike recognize that endpoint security is critical, but surveys like this one indicate that they're still not educating users on the importance of staying secure.

Executive Analysis

1. Palm Linux smartphone coming soon

Comment | Forward to a friend

The folks at Palm have a solution for Treo users suffering from iPhone envy: a new Linux-based smart phone should be heading out from the Palm stable in October. The new phone is designed to easily swap information with the Palm Foleo product.

2. 46 million Nokia batteries get recalled

Comment | Forward to a friend

There isn't a nursery rhyme that ends, "pop goes Nokia cell-phone battery." It might be time for one, though, since Nokia is recalling 46 million batteries that might get hot and pop right out of the phone. No one's been injured, and no one's house has burned down, but the threat of leaping batteries is enough to prompt a recall. Check your battery--if it's a Nokia BL-5C manufactured between December 2005 and November 2006, you can get a new one--before the one in your phone leaps out on its own.

Hands-On Wireless

1. Google's plans for 700 Mhz

Comment | Forward to a friend

Google may not have gotten everything that it wanted in the FCC decision on the 700 Mhz auction set for January 2008, but that doesn't mean that the search-engine giant is ready to sit out on the sidelines. CEO Eric Schmidt says that the company is likely to be an active participant in the auction. The goal? Creating a platform that encompasses the Internet across all delivery methods. Stay tuned.

2. 3G goes everywhere

Comment | Forward to a friend

In movies and on television, a Blackberry or Treo is the sure sign of an executive or highly-paid professional. Increasingly, though 3G phones are finding their way into the hands of tradespeople and non-professional workers. The democratization of 3G is rapidly becoming one of the most significant trends in wireless networking. What does it mean for your business?
