Influential New Yorkers

New York is an extraordinary city, and thus has been the home of some truly extraordinary individuals throughout its history. The History Research Office of Columbia University features interviews with ten influential New Yorkers on this website, which functions as an informal oral history of NYC during the second half of the 20th Century.

Entitled "Notable New Yorkers", the site has audio recordings and transcripts of these interviews which took place between 1955 and 2001. Highlights include interviews and conversations with such notable New Yorkers as former NYC mayor Ed Koch, psychologist and activist Mamie Phipps Clark, and ex-editor of the New York Times editorial page John B. Oakes.
