The team at Wine House.

Sunday 2nd of September, just two weeks away!
Wine
of the Week
Arakoon Doyen Shiraz 2003
McLaren Vale, South Australia
James Halliday 93 points!
Campbell Mattinson 90 points!
It is rare for one winery to have two wines as Wine of the Week
in a short space of time, it is a greater rarity that the biggest
selling wine at our Saturday tastings is also the most expensive,
both these facts are true of the 2003 Arakoon Doyen shiraz and are
testament to the quality of this young company.
Recently having their
Sellicks Beach Shiraz featured in
this newsletter Arakoon have come along way from a business which
had aspirations to make a feature film about the Australain wine
industry. Lucky or otherwise the film did not eventuate and the
Arakoon team went on to establish their own wine label and take
advantage of the exceptional fruit on offer in South Australia's
McLaren Vale.
The "Doyen" represents
the best that Arakoon have to offer and continue's the companies
panache for value for money bold red wine's. The nose is
concentrated chocolate and black fruit cake with rich raspberry
fruit characters on the palate but all this power is kept in check,
there is no overt jammyness and despite a whopping 16.5% alcohol
there is no heat on the finish. Controlling fruit of this density
and longevity can be difficult task even for the most experienced
companies, which adds to the Arakoon story a testament of
achievement in the wine industry and their Doyen worth every cent!

Luscious sounds like a term used to describe a farmer's pasture but

defiantly luscious. Made by shiraz expert Ben Glaetzer, the

the glass and this fruit continues on the palate.

Veritas
Hanisch Shiraz 1999
Robert
Parker 92 points!
"This offering is a testament to
the brilliant winemaker, Rolf Binder, who believes in (1) whole
berry fermentation, (2) large open-top fermenters, and (3) sweet,
sweet tannin. The 1999 Shiraz Hanisch boasts an inky purple color as
well as a terrific nose of jammy black fruits intermixed with

Grant Burge Sparkling
Pinot/Chardonnay N.V.
"Ready to Roll." - James Halliday.
Barossa Valley is not
know for its sparkling whites, generally the sun and soil is too
warm, but this has more elegance and finesse than you might expect.
While there are traces of citrus, practically lime, there are big
nougat and apricot flavours that meld in with nice honey biscuit
characters too. It is a top drinking bubbly, at a terrific price
point and, as James Halliday described it, this is one bottle "Ready
to roll".

Wine Trivia
Last week's question
was...
Can you name three wine facts associated with "three wise men"
member Balthazar?
The repeated question gave us many answers and while none contained
the the full answer we were seeking but
the prize will go to Brian who gave us the following facts:
1. Balthazar is the name of a SA wine company.
2. Balthazar is the name given to a 12 liter
wine bottle.
3. Balthazar was a king who incurred god's wraith for drinking wine
out of holy chalices.
A fourth fact has a specific relationship with wine bottles and is
that the
1993 Chateau
Mouton Rothschild label was painted by a man know
as Balthus, whose birth name was
Balthazar Klossowski de
Rola
.
This week we ask...
Australian wine labels have a colourful past, what single type of
wine could you be drinking if the bottle was
labeled as "Chablis", "White Burgundy" "riesling"
or even "hock"?
For your chance to win a
$30 Lunch Special at the Brasserie, or a $30 voucher at Old &
Rare Wines, email your correct answer to
sales@winehouse.com.au!
Extra
consideration is given to detailed
answers where many correct
replies are received in a short time period.
