Google Opens Traffic Quality Center

Google's debut of the Ad Traffic Quality Resource Center closely
follows the arrival of a similar service from Yahoo.
Click fraud persists in plaguing advertisers and the search
advertising companies that sell ad space. High-profile lawsuits
have happened as a result of businesspeople contending not
enough is being done to keep their budgets from being tapped
with illicit clicks.
With trust occupying an important part of any online advertising
product, Google and its competitors have to work hard to stay
ahead of the various grifters, thieves, and assorted criminals
who would loot their ad clients. They haven't always been very
communicative about their work, claiming that the bad guys would
profit from information about anti-click fraud efforts.

That position hasn't satisfied advertisers nor the many third
party companies that attempt to track click fraud independently
of the search companies. Google and others generally refuse to
give up information on their anti-fraud efforts, citing the
benefit of such transparency to those who would game the system.
Room for improvement in discussing the click fraud issue has
existed for some time. Yahoo opened a Traffic Quality center
last week, and now Google has followed suit.
Much of the information Google presents in its Ad Traffic Quality
pages has been seen before. Google claims it proactively finds
all but about .02 percent of what turn out to be invalid clicks.
Advertisers who find and report invalid clicks can be reimbursed
by Google after those clicks have been confirmed invalid.

Google suggested a way advertisers can help themselves against
click fraud. "Advertisers should have a working definition of
ROI that is trackable. For advertisers that are not selling
products directly online, try to define some intermediate step
(e.g. filling out a form) as a proxy for a conversion," they
said.
Another section of the Traffic Quality center focuses on some of
the technical discussions on click fraud. It includes articles
by Google staffers about click fraud, and references to official
and unofficial blogs by Google and by people like Matt Cutts and
Shuman Ghosemajumder, both noteworthy Googlers on the topic of
click fraud.

American Airlines Jets Google To Court

he whole keyword-advertising-violates-our-trademark debate has
been brought to court more than once and more than once has been
unsuccessful. American Airlines, though, is perhaps the largest
company to make the claim, filing a trademark violation suit
against Google.
American isn't thrilled that competitors and travel sites can
bid on its company name as a keyword. Though the competitor-
keyword argument has been made before, this may be a first where
the plaintiff cites online retailers selling competitor wares.

It would appear, if the suit were successful, Coke could sue
television stations advertising that 7-11 sells Pepsi too.
American complains that competitor keyword bidding and the ad
display associated with the keywords are tantamount to getting
a "free ride on American Airlines' brands through use of Google's
technology," and that Google is guilty of "vicarious trademark
infringement."
But I've digressed. Like I said, this is an article about the power
of branding.
Recently, a study on search engines showed that though search
results presented to participants were the same, and even though
the participants on the whole preferred Google in their daily lives,
the majority of them selected Yahoo as the best search engine in
the study, effectively choosing a logo over reality.

This seemed to prove my point that branding does indeed have an
effect in online marketing, and a effect on the ROI, though many
have argued that presence cannot compare to clicks and conversions
- a word of caution, though, like a 401(k) branding payoff is not
immediate. It is about getting your brand ingrained into the
collective psyche, just like McDonald's has (woefully) blisteringly
and effectively done over the past 40 years.
In the 55-page complaint, American asserts that "Google's
'Sponsored Links' may instead redirect [searchers] to: (i)
websites of airlines that compete with American Airlines; (ii)
websites that sell air travel not only on American Airlines, but
also on a variety of airlines that compete with American Airlines;
or (iii) websites that are entirely unrelated air travel."
It may be the second argument that's disturbing to many.
Technology and Law Blog's Eric Goldman is also skeptical:
"my working theory is that this was not a good lawsuit
for American Airlines to bring. I've noted many times before
that lawsuits over consumer "diversion" often cost more than
the lost profits from the allegedly diverted consumers."
