The Pulitzer Prize

Joseph Pulitzer, a legendary newspaper publisher and one of the fathers of modern Journalism, created the prizes that bear his name as an "incentive to excellence" for others to strive toward. Although the basis for the award was furnished in his last will and testament in 1904, the first Pulitzer prizes were not officially awarded until 1917.

The official "Pulitzer" website offers fascinating insight into the 90 years of the prizes' history, which are awarded annually in 21 distinct areas of Journalism and Photography. Visitors can search the site for specific winners, browse the "Timeline" by year, and read a brief biography about the life of Joseph Pulitzer.

People History

History in its truest form is not often found in textbooks, but rather deduced and re-created from a variety of resources such as documents, personal stories, letters, recordings, memories, interviews, and persistent research. The People History is a cool website where "People, Memories, and History join together," bringing an intimacy and purity to a subject that is far too often dominated by rigid dates and facts.

The site covers 75 years of History between the years of 1920 and 2006, including information on "Popular Culture", "Film and TV", "Technology", "World Events", "Cost of Living", "The Value of Money", and much more. Other cool features include a section of the site where ordinary folks can post their memories, find out "What Were You Doing When?" and other personalized tools that determine which major events in history correspond to your birthday, birth year, etc.

Daily Squelch

If you keep up with the daily news chances are you are both well-informed and occasionally depressed. So take a little time-out from the real world and make some time to laugh with the help of "The Daily Squelch".

"The Squelch" is a brilliantly satirical online "newspaper", created by two talented former editors of Berkeley's humor magazine "The Heuristic Squelch". Visitors will find that their arduous journey from Monday to Friday is made a lot easier thanks to the daily dose of hilarious, original, "Onion-esque" articles on this bright new website.

100 Years?100 Movies

There are two questions that people will always debate but never agree on; "Who is the Greatest Boxer of all Time?" and "What is the Greatest Film ever Made?" In honor of it's Centenary Anniversary earlier this year, the American Film Institute (AFI) made a noble attempt to address the latter topic with "100 Years?100 Movies", a list of the best American films ever made.

Film buffs and interested visitors will enjoy scrolling through the complete list online at FilmSite.Org (the official AFI website requires you to log in and download it), despite the inevitable bickering that follows any official attempt to answer this question. The AFI list, which covers movies made between the years 1912 and 2006, was voted on by 1,500 members of the American film community.
