IPC Governing Board Meets Prior to Paran American Games
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Today, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Governing Board (GB) concluded its 47th official meeting, which was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the occasion of the Rio 2007 Parapan American Games.
During three days of meetings, the GB discussed and approved several issues, including the IPC Classification Code and International Standards, the general budget for the Financial Year 2008 as well as the framework of the budget for 2009, which will be proposed to the IPC General Assembly for adoption later this year. Presented to and approved by the Governing Board, IPC’s broadcast strategy will focus on traditional TV as well as on new media.
The Bylaw on Intellectual Property Rights, which gives direction on the use of the Paralympic Brand, was also approved by the Governing Board. Amendments of the Bylaws on Rights and Obligations of IPC Members have been reviewed and approved to ensure compliance with other bylaws and current practice and procedures. The bylaws will now be submitted to the General Assembly for approval.
Furthermore, the Board received updates on the work of various IPC Standing Committees and Councils as well as approved membership relation issues, including the granting of provisional membership to the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and the National Paralympic Committee of Panama.
Said IPC President Sir Philip Craven after the meeting: “In the last three days, the IPC Governing Board held probably its best meetings ever, best in depth of discussions, quality of topics and spirit of its members.”
The opening session of the meeting was also attended by Carlos Nuzman, President of the Rio 2007 Parapan American Games Organizing Committee (CO-RIO) and Andrew Parsons, President of the Americas Paralympic Committee (APC). “I am very delighted that the IPC Governing Board decided to come to Brazil for its meeting and the 2007 Parapan American Games. For the first time in history, the Parapan American Games will be held in the same city and same venues as the Pan American Games and I am sure they will inspire the people of Brazil”, Mr. Nuzman said.
From 12 to 19 August, around 1,150 athletes from 25 countries from the Americas region will compete in ten sports and will use the opportunity to qualify for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.
The next Governing Board Meeting will take place in November 2007 in Seoul, Korea, just before the IPC General Assembly.
