Words Without Borders August Newsletter
Dear Friends:
Our idyllic Russian summer stretches into the languid weeks of August, and the reverie continues as Nadezhda Gorlova's narrator molds her grandmother into a golem and Ludmilla Petrushevskaya's seamstress remakes both clothes and her past. In a selection from Maxim Kantor's sensational debut, academics flirt with self-destruction. Alexander Vvedensky works round the clock, while Alnyuta Evseeva's neighbors solve old problems with a new beginning. Regina Derieva thinks dark thoughts, Ludmila Ulitskaya's bigoted orchard owner packs a suitcase with pears and prejudice, and Alexandr Skidan decodes and recodes St. Petersburg. Thanks to intern Rohan Kamicheril for making our Russian dreams come true.
Elsewhere in this issue, Magnus William-Olsson pens an ode to Pindar, Roque Dalton honors dead comrades, and Nouri Gana interviews Hisham Matar.
In Memoriam: Aura Estrada (1977-2007), a very talented young writer whose radiant intelligence, gleeful wit, and beautiful smile will never be forgotten by all of us who had the joy of knowing her, lost her life in a swimming accident last month.
On the Bookshelf: Tsipi Keller illuminates the cosmopolitan Uri Nssan Gnessin in Beside & Other Stories, Alex Wenger has fun with Written Lives by Javiar Marias, and Michael Kern Johnson diagnoses Montano's Malady by Enrique Vila-Matas.
Blogs, blogs, blogs: Arnon Grunberg remembers George Tabori and Rohan Kamicheril reports on Gombrowicz, Kharms, and Kerouac's French reception.
