* "The Hobart Shakespeareans" Encore Broadcast on
Tuesday, August 7 at 10 PM *
"The wonderful thing about documentaries, if they're done honestly,
is that they are the closest thing we can have to the chronicles of our
time. If you lived back in Rome AD 10 and there was a library of films,
would you rather see a documentary about Christ or Caesar, or would
you like to see Everybody Loves Raymond?"
– Mel Stuart, filmmaker
Teacher Rafe Esquith has a point of view — a very strong one —
about educating children of immigrants. Teaching in Los Angeles
at one of the nation's largest inner-city grade schools, Hobart
Elementary, Esquith leads his class of fifth graders through an
uncompromising curriculum of English, mathematics, geography
and literature. He inspires them with cross-country trips to learn
history first-hand. And at the end of the semester, every student
performs in a full-length Shakespeare play: in this case Hamlet,
with advice from actors Ian McKellen and Michael York. Despite
language barriers and poverty, these Hobart Shakespeareans
move on to attend outstanding colleges, motivated by a teacher
honored with a National Medal of Arts. A co-presentation with
Thirteen/WNET New York.
"The Hobart Shakespeareans" companion website
(www.pbs.org/pov/hobart) offers a streaming video trailer
of the film, an interview with filmmaker Mel Stuart (video, podcast
and text); a list of related websites, organizations and books;
a classroom activity; and the following special feature:
BOOK EXCERPT
"There Are No Shortcuts"
Hobart Shakespearean teacher Rafe Esquith shares his ideas
about teaching, raising and instilling values in children. He
encourages parents to be more involved in their children's
education and to "get to know what's really happening in the
school, so that you can direct your child toward the heroes."

* P.O.V. Online Shorts Festival – Watch Films Online! *
Feel like Internet video is becoming like your TV?
Too many channels and not enough quality content? Well,
we’ve got some great short films for you. We’re pleased to
announce the P.O.V. Online Short Film Festival! Every
month, P.O.V. will feature a new short film on our website.
“Sean”
This month we’re showing the film that inspired last week’s
P.O.V. film "Following Sean," the full, uncut 15-minute short
film entitled "Sean." In 1969, Ralph Arlyck made this student
short about his four-year-old upstairs neighbor. Sean's
precocious thoughts about pot smoking, the police and his
life in Haight Ashbury fascinated and horrified audiences
at the time. Watch “Sean” through August 31, 2007.

Rafe's Tips on Teaching and Fundraising
This week's offering is a little different than the usual lesson plan.
As teachers gear up for September, they might find some inspiration
in Rafe Esquith's classroom secrets and advice on fundraising.
Rafe shares his objectives in the classroom, his six levels of moral
development and a schedule of a typical day's activities for his
students. He also talks about raising money for your classroom
and the top 10 tips that he has found helpful in his own fundraising.
P.O.V. documentaries can be taped off-the-air and used for
educational purposes for up to one year from the initial broadcast.
In addition, P.O.V. offers a lending library of DVDs and VHS tapes
that you can borrow anytime during the school year — FOR FREE!
